Was der SA-Mann singt [medley]
"Was der SA-Mann singt" was a medley of Nazi songs recorded for the Patria label in 1931/1932 (in six parts) by a vocal quartet led by Franz Baumann, with a piano accompaniment. The group was credited as "Nationalsozialistisches Schallplatten-Quartett" on record labels, but that was just a made-up, one time used name. The medley was originally released on Patria picture discs numbers 112-114 and it was re-released on the standard Patria (blue-labelled) records numbers 130-132, renamed "Was wir singen". The performance itself was nothing special (just four voices and a piano), but the songs, on the other hand, were rather interesting, many of which were never released on commercial records again.
Contents:
I
- Als die gold'ne Abendsonne
- Die Hitlerscharen heißen wir
- SA marschiert
- Kameraden, laßt erschallen
II
- Heil, mein Lieb, der Morgen graut
- Du kleiner Tambour, schlage ein
- So hell das Auge
III
- Es zog ein Hitlermann hinaus
- Laßt, Brüder, hoch das Banner weh'n
- Nur ein Ruf gilt
IV
- War einst ein junger Sturmsoldat
- Wer will mit uns zum Kampfe zieh'n
- Wir sind die Sturmkolonnen
- Brüder in Zechen und Gruben
V
- Was wallest du stumm durch den blühenden Hain
- Wenn alle untreu werden
- Das alte Reich zerrissen
VI
- Wir sind des Hitlers braunes Heer
- "Heil Hitler" rufts in allen Gau'n
- Vom Sturmwind bewegt unser Hakenkreuzpanier

Re: Was der SA-Mann singt
Thank you so much Ivan for these information.
Was the part 6 of this recording released post-war?
I remember seeing a vinyl record that was called "Was Der S.A.-Mann Singt Teil 6" a while ago, If I remember correctly it was released around the 1980s and the label was a college of pictures too, but I don't remember the contents of this record.

Re: Was der SA-Mann singt
Ah, there was apparently some untitled, low-budget LP made by God-knows-who (an anonymous production) with this medley and some Hitler speeches on it. They used the artwork of picture disc Patria 114, part VI, for the cover, so that's why it's listed as "Was Der S.A.-Mann Singt Teil 6" on Discogs. But that's not the title of the LP compilation; as I wrote, the compilation was untitled.

I found that vinyl LP years ago online as mp3. It is a wild mix of well known ns songs and a few Hitler speeches. So the content has nothing to do with the label.

Re: Was der SA-Mann singt [medley]
Hi Ivan, thanks for the information. I find it interesting that they did these marching songs on piano. I did hear some march recordings involving accordion, piano, organ, and even on the banjo that was released in that era, but its not as common. I do find it interesting to have vocals with piano as it really doesn't seem to be characteristic of that era of big military bands.
Also a question, did they have multiple discs in these album (as most potpourris I have seen is on a single disc). Cheers!
