I know nothing about German Military music. When I was a kid I watched a VCR taped episode of World At War. There is one song that still is stuck in my head. It is played on the episode when Hitler is seen traveling on a train from France which surrendered. The first few words, in english, I think, are Onward Soldier...

Not much to go on... maybe someone can help? If you know the song is there an MP3 version for it?

Thank you

It's "Wenn die Soldaten durch die Stadt marschieren", recorded in Stereo in 1959...

Best wishes...

Hi all, I am looking for a song too. I might have it already as i already have a 6 CD Third Reich pack but i can't find the song in it. The song plays twice in the 5th episode (5 "Barbarossa (June – December 1941)") of this TV series. The song plays from 2:13 to 3:10 (Hitler after the success of the French victory) and from 24:40 to 25:30. Its a very happy peppy song.

Dear Killswitch,

the sung part is "Wenn die Soldaten durch die Stadt marschieren", the instrumental part is "Hamburg ist ein schönes Städtchen". Both are humorous German soldiers' songs from the 19th century and are very popular from then until today.
The piece of music used in this documentary is re-cut from a post-WWII potpourri performed by the FRG's Bundeswehr in the mid-1960s.

Best regards,
Thomas

Can anyone point me in the right direction onto where I can find this particular version of the song?

If I remember correctly, that version of "Wenn die Soldaten" is the one from the "Drei Lilien, drei Lilien..." Potpourri. It's been ages since I last watched that episode.

It's Rosamunde. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beer_Barrel_Polka

It was so popular that everyone performed it. So I can't really say who sings in that video.
If we become increasingly humble about how little we know, we may be more eager to search.

It's "Das waren die Soldaten", music by Adolf Brandmayer, lyrics by Bruno Balz, sung by Helga Wille, with Adalbert Lutter's orchestra, recorded in Berlin for "Telefunken" on 27.01.1942.

Sung by the Rudi-Schuricke-Terzett (the speed is too fast in your video). Albert Vossen plays the accordion.

Cheers,
Ivan

Nothing online but there's a digitized copy on CD "Radioklänge im Krieg".

Cheers,
