Uploading / downloading / copyright

Post by Hanski » 17 Jul 2004 11:29

Would there be any support to the idea of a specific section for downloadable sound files related to this Forum? To contain such as marches, military songs, even national anthems etc. by countries, preferably categorized by someone with musical education.

Categorized musical information is not a bad idea, but the problem with music (and video for that matter) is that such files (apart from the possible copyright issues) use up a lot of space and bandwidth thus increasing the costs for running the forum.

But an solution can be that anybody has an site which the forum site can cooperate with or something like that. I think this is better for saving space for discussion and pic´s!

How about a specific section for links only to the download sites? This would also allow posting comments with the links.

... and if I elaborate this a bit further: the download links could come under the section Research Help, and there could be another subtitle for video download links.

I don't think we would violate any copyrights by just presenting links to existing websites that are there already for downloads anyway? This is what we have been doing all the time, scattered in posts all around various threads of the Forum, but now we would only group them under systematic retrieval trees.

No need for a section, a regular thread would be better in my opinion, the starter of the thread just updates the first post with new links and info as it becomes available.

By providing the links we risk getting into legal problems and this area is still unclear in many countries, but if we *only* post links to period works and nothing post-war, we should be ok.

that's true legal is a big deal

i mean most of free music is illegal, i bet right now everything has copyrights

the best thing is just forget about it keep it for yourself, and save yourself a headache

I think musical pieces have somekind of limits to the duration of copyright
protection too.

I think its around 50 years after composers death. It varies from country
to country. Here's a link to USA Copyright Durations:
http://www.lib.rochester.edu/copyright/durcopy.htm

Maybe some of the war time songs are already free of copyright
protection? Although, Im kind of wondering, what if somebody does
a new version of an old song.. well.. anyways.. just few thoughts :)

-Pete

Well if you knew this, why are you still attempting to upload such CD here? With mp3s copied from various CDs, mostly copyrighted and also with many incorrect titles / disinformations, with no historical background nor info on the performers, etc...

Please stop.
