There are several melodies for it. One is the familiar, the other is the same as the Dutch national anthem "Wilhelmus".

"Wenn alle untreu werden" is better known as Schenkendorf's "Treuelied" and to my knowledge, had no connections to the SS prior to early 1930's when the new oath together with an oath song was introduced. I think that selection of this old, religious Treuelied to an SS oath song had much to do with Himmler's fascination towards chivalry and old religious orders.

Could someone briefly outline how and why did this poem of Schenkendorf (1814) become the official SS oath song? Also, when did it appear for the first time (the earliest document mentioning it in direct connection with the SS)?

There is a well known recording of Himmler's speech in Frankfurt in June 1933 (the date is presented as 11-6-1933, I interpreted it that way), followed by a choir performance of this "Treuelied". Perhaps that was the introduction of this song within the SS or at least one of the very first times when it was presented to the public in its capacity as an oath song. There was large-scale ideological and visual development phase within the SS between 1932 and 1934, adoption of an oath song might have been part of this process.

Thanks in advance,
Mikko

What German or Nazi song is this please?

Post by SebastianHill » 02 Nov 2020 18:12

https://archive.org/details/ErnstZndelUnbowed

The song starts just after the video starts at about 12 seconds.

Please don’t get the wrong idea, I know exactly who Ernst Zündel was. I think Holocaust denial is disgusting and wrong.

I’m not sure if it’s just a German war song or specifically a Nazi song. I have heard it on documentaries and YouTube videos in the past.

Can anyone help me please?

Thanks!

An interesting detail about a post-war recording of "Wenn alle untreu werden". This article says that the publisher Hocheder had the piece sung and recorded by the Essen Police Choir.

Is it known if the recording was released on one of their vinyl records?
