anybody know the Herms Niel song with the lyrics, there used to be a recording on youtube but I think it's been deleted:

Der Sieg wird unser sein ( "Hell schmettern die Signale") (....Die Stunde hat geschlagen...)

About Niel's house in Eiche: Is the adress known? I sadly don't remember, if Freitag mentions it in his book.

Back then address was Eiche, Bergstrasse 2.
According to 1937/38 address book there were only two houses there (no.1 and 2).
Unfortunately I have no idea what's the current name of that street or if it still exists.

Hello, Greg, and thanks for posting.

I don't think they were mentioned, but bear in mind that Kiesant often recorded Niel's pieces, being his closest friend (Kiesant's band was stationed in Potsdam-Eiche, where Niel lived).

He recorded (at least) 26 Niel-tracks for Lindström's Kristall and Imperial labels, between 1939 and 1942:

KC 27484 | Erika
KC 27485 | Die ganze Kompanie
KC 27486 | Du Schönste vom Städtel, schwarzbraunes Mädel
KC 27487 | Heute muß ich fort von dir!
KC 27772 | Wir sind Kameraden
KC 27848 | Liebling, wenn ich traurig bin
KC 27932 | Edelweiß
KC 27934 | Mein schönes Fuldatal
KC 27938 | Matrosenlied
KC 28122 | Gerda - Ursula - Marie!
KC 28123 | Die Landpartie

KC 28220 | Kamerad, wir marschieren im Westen!
KC 28498 | Die Narvik-Jäger
KC 28499 | Die tolle Kompanie
KC 28501 | Edeltraut

KC 28933 | Liebes Mädel, schönes Kind!
KC 28934 | Kleine Elisabeth – schöne Elisabeth!
KC 28935 | Waldtraut ist ein schönes Mädchen

KC 28996 | Wir marschieren mit Herms Niel * a medley of Niel's songs compiled by his arranger Erich Gutzeit, part 1
KC 28997 | Wir marschieren mit Herms Niel * part 2
KC 28998 | Der treue Feldsoldat
KC 29240 | Das Afrikakorps
KC 29241 | Schneidig ist die Infantrie!
KC 29242 | Schwarzbraune Margareth
KC 29243 | Es blüht ein Röselein
KC 29245 | Mit England wird jetzt Schluß gemacht

Cheers,
Ivan

Erika

#222

Post by Ivan Ž. » 26 Jul 2019, 23:44

The song "Erika" was just removed from the Herms Niel YouTube channel because it was flagged as a violence/hatred-inciting piece. Yes, "Erika" - an apolitical prewar love song inspired by a dog playing with wasps on a nice summer day. Nothing shocking though, it was expected. But why did this happen? Because the song's history was distorted over the (recent) years by ignorant people who knew nothing about it, never cared to understand its lyrics (or did understand them but chose to ignore their meaning), but did like its catchy tune and tying it to an extremist regime. (Note: the removed video did contain the real history of the song, the same as the lyrics, both of which were ignored.)

I actually followed the process of "Erika" being transformed from a love song to a "hatred-inciting" piece. It all began in the early 2000s, when on one of the few existing history music websites (there were only about 2-3 of them at the time) someone uploaded "Kaarina" - the Finnish version of "Erika" - as a march of the Finnish SS (another nonsense). Then someone uploaded a German civilian prewar version of "Erika" (by Woitschach's band) and also named it march of the Finnish SS! I still remember the title: "Marsch der Finnländer SS" (if someone told me back then what would the consequences of such a ridiculous title be, I wouldn't have believed it). Eventually, the "not so cool" word "Finnländer" was removed from the fictional title, and the ignorant internet users continued spreading the song as a march of the SS. Note that none of this was YouTube's fault - it's the people, misusing the internet - mostly Third Reich fanboys who knew little about what they were fans of. Additionally, filmmakers like Spielberg (whom I do respect as a good director) - who misused "Erika" by tying it to Holocaust scenes in his "Schindler's List" - by no means helped the world famous soldiers' love song keep its formerly-good reputation.

Again and again: don't toy with history. Find something more useful to do. For example - stare at a dot on your ceiling. Anything is better than being ignorant and destructive. The "Erika" song is just a tiny example of ignorance ruining history, and art as well. And what for? (A rhetorical question.) I understand one's urge to live in a fantasy world, but then try having enough guts and brains to create a complete fantasy of your own, or in this case, a fantasy song. Don't ruin an existing, historical piece. If you wish your favourite organisation had a catchy song - compose one! And make up an organisation, too. Remember: your actions also show the level of your intelligence. By distorting a love song, misrepresenting it as a war criminal song, you're compromising your own persona. And if you find that satisfying, well then I say knock yourselves out.

Cheers,
Ivan

[Host's note: the lyrics below are incorrect]

Der Sieg wird unser sein!

1. Die Stunde hat geschlagen,
So wie ein Weltgericht.
Nach den Bereitschaftstagen
Der große Sturm losbricht!

Hell schmettern die Signale,
Voraus im Flammenschein,
Der roten Notballade.
/: Der Sieg wird unser sein! :/

2. Getreu und ohne Zagen
Hat keiner so wie wir
Die harte Zeit ertragen,
Die lange, hart und schwer.

Hell schmettern die Signale...

3. Dann geht's dir an den Kragen,
Du Land der Heuchelei!
Ein Weltreich wird zerschlagen
Und Deutschland ewig frei!

Hell schmettern die Signale...

I am in possession of the recording and have written down the lyrics.
If someone has the lyrics in writing, please feel free to make corrections.

Greetings
MLK

You can find the correct lyrics to the last strophe & refrain in Prieberg's "Handbuch". Here's what you misheard (in red):

3. Bald geht's dir an den Kragen,
du Land der Heuchelei,
dein Weltreich wird zerschlagen
und Deutschland ewig frei.

Hell schmettern die Signale,
Sprung auf im Flammenschein,
der roten Glut Fanale,
der Sieg wird unser sein,
der Sieg wird unser sein!

As far as I can hear, the rest of your transcription is also so-so. Some parts are correct, some are not. But I can't hear clearly what they sing there. Generally, it's best having patience and waiting for the original lyrics to surface than trying to transcribe them by listening. Most people make too many mistakes in their transcriptions, often significantly changing the meaning of the lyrics they're trying to transcribe. Historical songs are historical documents and they're not to be toyed with.

Cheers,
Ivan

Thanks! I have written down the lyrics with two friends. We had long discussions about some parts because, as you mentioned, it is hard to hear some parts of the text.

Thanks for your help. That was exactly what we needed! :)
