I've been shocked literally not to find any (and I mean none...) 78's for sale on the net from the war or pre-war from Germany. Any suggestions on where to look? My wife joked that there was nothing you couldn't find on Ebay. I think they might not allow those in the listings...

Records such as...?
SS band, seen for sale, 2 marches on 78 £20, thats about $40 each
I have seen several other period records for sale from all forces but german ones seem hard to spot. Searching on ebay is a nightmare sometimes. I reckon I have seen maybe 5 or 6 in the last couple of months but prices ended up high. People on ebay have too much money sometimes and will bid more and more in a crazy way to get that item they MUST have! Then everyone thinks they are sitting on a goldmine. 8 or 10 yrs ago I could get brit. wartime songs for 50p but now popular ones from say George Formby can be bid up to and over £10 each.
I have seen several by different recording companies, including one with a swaz. label BUT of course remember that means the seller thinks KA-CHING!

I know what you mean about those with more money than good sense. The only recording I've seen so far is up on the German Ebay site for 39- Euros. It is "Es geht um's Vaterland." I suppose many Europeans would want to be real careful what they put up there given the restrictions on such things. As far as what I would be interested in that is a good question. I think when one talks about the Third Reich in Music the first thing that comes up is "Horst Wessel Lied." So that would be a good one to display and maybe if one could find some of the marches of the SA or SS. I am sure any picture lables would be so high the air would get thin.....
But any other suggestions would be most welcome. I'm not in any big hurry....

I am a record dealer and have had problems with e-bay in the past over some Third Reich records which I listed. E-bay removed them on several occasions and gave me a final warning that if I relisted them my account would be suspended indefinitely. 
Most reputable dealers now avoid e-bay as they have a reputation for being "difficult" over any items associated with the Third Reich period. Yet they allow pirate DVD's and pornography to be listed freely - it is a disgrace!!!

Have you looked in the Salvation Army or Goodwill, and similar Thriftstores ?
I have picked up some nice, well preserved 78's over time. Alas they are catching on to "fair" market prices, and they are no longer 25cents a piece or so.
But it's worth looking.

You know I went over to a few of those used types of shops and where they used to have many 78's they now have nothing. I spoke with one of the people who runs the store and they told me that they had thrown out hundreds of 78's just before Christmas holiday as no one wanted them and they needed room. I have found a few period records only for sale. While looking around I found not a German but a Japanese 78 but I can't read the script to know what it is. It's probably pre-war though.

I have been collecting since 1962 when I was stationed in Oppenhiem/Nierstein and heard my first German military band. I am always looking for more marches. I would like to see a music forum created here. On those days I don't feel or want to exercise,I put on my Ipod,choose "Alte Kameraden", turn it up loud, and off I go..just terrific!! Finding German 78s - the *hard* ones
Hi guys, so as part of our camp impression, I bring a portable 78 player (1929 Victrola, but a '30s Triumpfon is on the way from Germany), and I refuse to do the "mp3 on an ipod" route because it just irks me.
So I've collected a few a bit of German and American (ok a LOT of American) wartime 78s. "Erika" was a challenge, but I found that one finally. The hardest so far is "Uns're Fahne flattert uns voran", I hear it's supremely political and outright banned in Germany/France (aka, they broke them into pieces).
Is this one going to be impossible to find? Are there better sources than eBay (god I hope so...)?
Also, suggestions on Musik für die Soldaten? I have the list from the U-boat at the Field Museum of the 81 records they carried at the time, and I have been going down that with good success.

It's not impossible to find such a record, but you'll have to do quite a bit of searching and asking around. You can even find it on eBay from time to time, but never under its real or full title (you'll have to search each 78 rpm auction with uncredited titles, one by one).
Generally, I strongly suggest NOT purchasing such a record to play it in public, for any purpose. You don't need it for reenactment. Soldiers played love songs much more often anyway, rather than political. A reenactment should not be a reason nor an excuse for playing a song about sacrificing children's lives for the swastika, in public. It's bad taste and it's sending a bad message (no matter whether the reason for playing it is an reenactment, the message is still there).

So I just bought a house from 1907, and the previous owners sold us a Victor Victrola, which is in phenomenal condition. I have the medium and loud metal needles, and throw them away after each song. I was hoping to find some German 78's, but it is my understanding that these are shellac. Will these play okay on my Victrola? Also, where do you guys find your records? I have a couple of friends from Germany looking for me, and have posted on many of the Facebook pages asking if anyone has some for sale, but so far, I have came up empty handed. I would really like, in particular: "Funkerlied", "Sieg Heil - Viktoria!", "Wenn die Soldaten", "Erika", and "Was wollen wir trinken" (I believe this is a relatively modern song, but I can always hope). I was hoping that you guys might be able to provide some advice. Thank you in advance.

You're welcome. I am sad to hear that anyone actually tied "Was wollen wir trinken" with the German army, it's ridiculous. People are really toying with history on YouTube. Yes, the more you play your shellac records the more you'll be wearing them out (damaging them). This is why it's best to play the record once, digitize the sound and leaave the record be.
Yes, many European sellers won't ship 78 rpm records to the US for various reasons, the main one being the fact that they easily get broken and it takes weeks and weeks before the package finally arrives, often causing buyer complaints in the meantime ("Where's my package!" and so on). You'll have to keep searching for right sellers. And watch out for the high prices (ignore the above 100 EUR sales, that's too much for the type of songs you're searching for).

Search up well known German artists or band leaders, rather than "78s", as many only list the song/artist name. It is very common to get things shipped from Germany, even using the German eBay. If you want to filter out the ones that don't have shipping to other places, select 'Weltweit" (Worldwide) on the left side bar. Otherwise, you could always contact sellers regarding shipping to various locations, of course.
