Preserving zinc medals.

Postby Materia » 15 Jul 2017 18:28

Hello, I need some advice.

Im looking at cerain items, which are medals [Österreich/Ungarn]. Unfortunately I have not seen a mint one yet, I guess its impossible, because of the material they are made of. I could either pass, or get them in the best possible condition, and try to preserve somehow.

The question is, how?

I have already read, that they deteriorate because of the metal composition, and that cannot be stopped at all. It can be delayed.

I would be very grateful for any replies. I want to "save" them, rather than let them root, but I dont want to do it at all cost.

The best is Renaissance Wax, it was developed by the British Museum and can be used for everything. It leaves no residue and prevents zinc pest from spreading or rust from developing on any metal. I highly recommend you use this instead of Vaseline. Jim

First you should clean any loose dirt, debris etc. from the zinc award with a soft toothbrush then give it a coat of Vaseline let the Vaseline stay on the item for several hours. Then remove the excess Vaseline; once that is done you can use Ren wax to seal the item. Ren wax is used by dagger collectors to protect the blades from fingerprints & moisture in the air (humidity).
