A soldier was able to wear the ribbons for the Ostfront medal, and the Iron Cross, second class, in the second button hole on his tunic. If a man had both medals, was there a particular protocol for how these ribbons should be worn? For example, was the Iron Cross ribbon supposed to be worn to display the Iron Cross ribbon above the East Front ribbon, or vice versa?
Does anyone have any examples of soldiers pictured with both the EK 2nd class and Ostfront ribbons on their tunics? Thanks

The Winter War Medal was considered to be on the same level as a decoration, unofficially, and was worn through the buttonhole by many veterans of that bitter winter but official valour and merit decorations like the EK2 and KVK2 took precedence. The Winter War Medal ribbon was therefore worn under EK and KVK ribbons as this portrait of Walter Hümmel shows. There are plenty of photos of German soldiers wearing just the Winter War Medal ribbon in their buttonholes.
Hope this helps,
