Yes indeed, this was the practice when the recipient coul dnot quickly pose for a new photo, there is a good pic of kaltenbrunner with this award and it is obviously doctored in the darkroom! Pohl looks like another one..
Raz...! You let it go...???? Man.. that was a bad move I think, still, you got some other good items with the money right..?? It didn't all go on wine women and song..?
Regards

Don't worry Matt, it's back in my collection after realizing what a bad
trade it was. With the help of Gordon Williamson and Chris Jenkins we
found mine to be one of the supposed later strikes designated by "certain"
features and traits rather than one of the earlier strikes by Deschler.
Here's a newer pic of the beast.

Phew
Sehr Güt;
I am glad to know you have got it back, thats a great piece to centre a collection of the KVK section on !!! Got to be a keeper, you certainly have a knack for finding great items. Mind you, I sometimes have come across amazing items and wish I had the $$$, maybe I should never have gotten interested in classic cars.... Mind you I am thinking of getting a Kübelwagen or a Mercedes Staff car in a few years time....mwah ha ha, I'd even fancy an Sdkfz222 like Gruber form 'Allo allo, remember his "little tank"....?
Kind Regards
