How many DKiG-wearers in 188. Gebirgs-Jg.-Divsion?

Post by Dimitrii » 08 Apr 2023 12:33

Hello everybody,

How many DKIG-wearers were there in this division? It seems here was only one (Major dr.Schulze) and he had been awarded it before being assigned to this division.

Any opinions?

Many thanks in advance.

Hello, Dimitri.

The only (eventual) one that I could find is Oberst Josef Brandl who commanded Gebirgsjäger-Regiment 903 of the 188. Gebirgs-Division. This regiment was based on the Reserve-Gebirgsjäger-Regiment 138 that originally was the Ersatz unit for the 3. Gebirgs-Division. Oberst Josef Brandl could possibly be the same as the Josef Brandl who received the DKiG on 14.04.1942 as a Major commanding I./Geb.Jg.Rgt. 138.

I looked through Scherzer & Patzwall's "Das Deutsche Kreuz 1941-1945" (2001) for the other named officers that Lexikon-der-Wehrmacht provides for the 188. Gebirgs-Division but there was no other matches in Scherzer & Patzwall. Furthermore there is no mentioning of any Carl Schulze as a DKiG-Träger that fits, there was Fallschirmjäger Oberleutnant Karl Schulze and a SS-Sturmbannführer Karl-Willy Schulze who received the DKiG but that's it.
