Oh, I forgot:
He was awarded with the Magyar Érdemrend Tisztikeresztje hadiszalagon kardokkal, Magyar Érdemrend Lovagkeresztje hadiszalagon kardokkal, Kormányzói dícsérő Elismerés hadiszalagon kardokkal, and with the German EK I and EK II too.

I don't want to translate the Hungarian expressions, because this is not too simply for me:-) Sorry
The first two Hungarian medals were approx. Hungarian Knight Crosses.

Hando Ruus

Post by TL » 10 Jul 2002 16:38

Hello guys,

According to Rolf Michaelis (in his Esten in der Waffen-SS) the only Estonian to receive the German Cross in Gold was SS (Waffen)-Hauptsturmführer Hando Ruus on 30 December 1944 for his participation in the fighting in the Sinimäe area in Estonia.

cheers,

TL

Requin,

Those are fantastic photos!!! Also, that's another non-German DKiG award to add to the list:

21 December 1942: General Enea Navarini, Commanding General of the XXI Italian Corps in North Africa.

Rommel got on very well with Navarini and wrote that he held him in the highest regard.

Great work Requin!

Shawn

TL,

Thanks for the Estonian addition to the list! Horst Scheibert lists Ruus in his DKiG book and, besides the good information you supplied, gives his unit as SS-Volunteer Divisional Fusilier Battalion 20.

Shawn

There is a mistake here:
Brig. gen. Leonard Mociulschi (maj. gen. in May 1944) was the CO of the 3rd Mountain Division, not of the fourth.

I am curious, how important was the German Cross in Gold? What were the criteria for this award? (I do not too much about WWII awards)
