Sounds like its a makers number... Does it have an 'M/' before the number?

John is obviously correct, it's the RZM metal(M1) code of Wilhelm Duemer(120).

The Reichszeugmeisterei der NSDAP or RZM was the quality control office of the NSDAP. All firms wishing to manufacture items for NSDAP formations or organisations had to apply for an RZM number. This number was stamped on most items made by the firm and quality was strictly controlled by the RZM office. If a firm did not live up to quality expectations, it could lose its RZM number and hence its permission to manufacture these items.

I could have gotten one two years ago (when I just started collecting) for $15 CDN but the pin was broken, and now I can kick myself in the backside for passing it up.

You can still get them, the go for about $50 depending on the condition and type, enamel / painted.

Try the Ruptured Duck, they have some on sale there.
