PzGrenRgt 64 - Kommandeur Oberst Joachim Hesse -Geschichte

#1

Post by FahnenjunkerOberfeld » 10 Jan 2007, 18:16

Based on personal accounts, anecdotes, documents and photographs from my Grandfather, I am starting to put together a research file on the PzGrenRgt 64 from autumn/winter 1942 -1945.
My Grandfather, Fritz Steguweit, served with the regiment's commander (Oberst Joachim Hesse) as his adjutant and bodyguard during that time.

I would be very excited to hear from anybody who either served in the PzGrenRgt 64 during this time, knows about the regiment's history, has anecdotes or photos they are willing to share.

I am equally happy to share my information and some of the personal photos I have, should that be of interest to somebody.

Many thanks!

Hesse , who received his RK on 6.4.44 was Kdr.of PzGrenRgt 64 from 14.1. till February 1944 ( exakt date unknown ) , than Hauptmann Hans Blömcke was a short time Führer of the Regiment , till 22.2.44 and after this date Hesse was Kdr. 6.7.44.. That is what I have in my files regarding him . This page :

offers a small picture and his DoB and DoD ...

An Overview about the composations of 16.PzDiv. throughout the war you may find here :

Bonsoir,
In the history of the 16.PzDiv. by Günter Schmits Dörfler; page 175 and in Geschichte der 19.Panzer-Division , Podzun-Pallas Verlag 1958 page 257
There is an Oberfeldwebel Steguweit PzGr.Grt.64 with the DKiG (Deutsche Kreuz in Gold)
But I can't find his name in " Die träger des Deutschen Kreuz in Gold" and "Deutschen Kreuz in Silber" by Horst Scheibert.

While looking for something else in the Mitteilungsblatt of 16. Panzer-Division ("Unsere 16."), I came across a comprehensive article written by Hesse himself. It is over six A4 pages and contains very precise information about his career, particularly as commander of Pz.Gr.Rgt.64. If someone is interested, I'll scan it and post it here for all to see.

According to Hesse himself, he had command of the regiment for 204 days, from 14 January 1944 until 4 August 1944.

Best wishes,
Jason

Hi Jason , that would be very interesting . I took the dates for Hesse from the Stellenbesetzung 16.Panzerdivision , compiled by Veit Scherzer .

OK, here goes. The first 4 pages are from "Unsere 16.", Folge 142, Oktober 1988, S. 7-10. By the way, the holes punched in the pages (for placement into a ring binder) were not done by me!

Well, that's all of the pages. I tried to maintain as much quality as I could while fitting within the 256KB file size limitation.

Hope this is of interest!

All the best,
Jason

Jason - that's fantastic!!!!! Thank you for sharing this. I have quite a few photos of the Oberst on the Eastern front I could share with everybody if there's interest.

Do you know if the Mitteilungsblatt exist only in hard copy or electronically as well? Also, can you see any contact details for the editor/publisher of your copy of the Mitteilungsblatt?

Christian
