For some reason I have his last rank (maybe a posthumous promotion?) as Oberstleutnant - I don't recall the source... Do you perchance have any of his promotion dates?

Best,
~ Mike

Dear harmel and Mike,
In my major source, Franz Thomas: Eichenlaubträger by Biblio Verlag not mentioned as Kia or Mia. Why? His fate is not cleared, maybe still was in living when the book published (1997/1998)?
What's your sources?

Thanks for those dates, Harmel.

Must admit that I entered the date of death based on Harmel's post; and of course, you're right- no date of death is given in Franz Thomas' book.

I just checked the volksbund.de site and although there are a number of Kündigers listed, Herbert is not among them (not always definitive proof that a soldier survived the war, of course).

Best wishes,
~ Mike
