Gefreiter Arnold Huebner

Post by Peter H » 14 Oct 2007 06:47

Huebner(1919-1981) of Flak Regiment 33 was the "first private soldier of the Afrikakorps to receive the Knight's Cross".

Credited with knocking out 24 tanks up to December 1941 as a 88mm gunner.

The award was made at Leipzig on the 7th March 1942 after Flak Regiment 33 had returned to Germany for refitting in February 1942.Eric Heintze, his gun commander, was also awarded the RKT.

Huebner spent many months in hospital overcoming an infection he picked up in North Africa.Later he saw action in Normandy in 1944.Leutnant Huebner was captured by the Americans in May 1945.

Hello Peter!

Gefreiter Arnold Huebner was, to my knowledge, also the first RKT from the Mannschaft of the Luftwaffe. Here's a nice photograph of Huebner...

Thanks Krollspell.Great photos.

Heintze passed way in 1998.

Does anyone know if it was common to move units back from Afrika to Germany for refitting?

Regards
Peter

There is in Germany a little book of the edition "Ritterkreuzprofile" about Arnold Hübner's life ("Arnold Hübner - der erste Gefreite des Afrikakorps mit Ritterkreuz"). The book has 44 pages with many pictures of Arnold Hübner (many unknown pictures from his family).
The book was published at Unitec Medienvertrieb E.K. (www.Unitec-Medienvertriebe.de)
