Are there any accounts/photos of German snipers using M91's on any other front than the Eastern? Thank you. Michael

Here's Grenadier Scheuter who scored 35 kills in an afternoon...

Image
Topic removed to here from the "Heer, Waffen-SS and Volkssturm" forum.

Please go on with contributions - anything welcome !
Especially : can you add anything to the names listed in this thread where a confirmation of name / unit / "kills" remained open ?

Eventually we can attempt to compile an up-to-date list !?

Take also note of this parallel thread please

Master list on page 1 installed. Goal is to fix secure and/or known data sets. I have started with Pein and Allerberger. Evaluation of the thread is ongoing.

For all interested - have a look also on Daniel's essay on the AHFactbook : Snipers in Normandy 1944

Does anyone know more about Hans Steinberg [not mentioned here] who received the "Anerkennungsurkunde" ? :
Steinberg, Hans, 27.06.1944 (3506), Obergefreiter, Scharfschütze 9./Gren.Rgt. 410 / 122. Inf.Div.

I had thought this thread was deleted until recently, when I discovered it had been moved to this section...

As for D. Löwenhamn's short reference to the location of sniper training schools on the first page of this thread, I found an interesting section in Richard D Law's "Backbone of the Wehrmacht Volume II - Sniper Variations of the German K98k Rifle", the 2002 second edition, page 139, for anyone who has this book.
In case this information isn't already known here (the original question is from years ago  ), it's as following:

Known sniper training companies as of 1944
(listed by sniper training company number, Wehrkreis, training ground location):

Sniper Training Company 101, WKI, Stablack training grounds
103, WKIII, Wanderen
104, IV, Zeithain
105, V, Böttingen bei Münsingen
106, VI, Sennelager
107, VII, Hohenfels
108, VIII, Lamsdorf
109, IX, Wildflecken/Röhn
110, X, Munster-Lager
111, XI, Bergen/Celle
112, XII, Heidelberg, Grossdeutschland
113, XIII, Grafenwöhr/East
118, XVIII, Seethaler-Alpe
120, XX, Obergruppe
Sniper Training Company WK XXI, Altwarp/Uckm
Military Shooting School WK XVII, Bruck a d Leitha
Denmark Military District Sniper Training Company, Okabol
Training Staff I, Sniper Training Company, Döberitz
154th Field Training Division Sniper Training Company, Deutsch-Brod/Protecterate
1 and 2 Sniper Training Companies 154th Reserve Infantry Division
Sniper Inspectorate-Shooting School Dollersheim, Dollersheim
Sniper School of Replacement Brig (Mot) Greater Germany, Cottbus
Sniper School of Replacement Brig (Mot) General's Hall, Danzig-Langfuer
Sniper School of 233rd Panzer Division
Sniper School of Panzer Truppe III, Küstrin
Sniper School of Panzer Truppe VI, Coesfeld
Sniper School of Panzer Truppe IX, Erfurt
Sniper School of Panzer Truppe XIII, Bamberg
Sniper School of Panzer Truppe XVII, Vienna
Sniper School of Panzer Truppe XXI/II, Kalisch

ReinhardH, thanks for this great info ! :D
I have placed it to the main list also which was started on page 1 of this thread.
A few translations of the author, englishized terms, and locations are slightly wrong or irritating ; I've taken the liberty to correct them.
Denmark Military District Sniper Training Company, Okabol - is actually Oksböl [german term]
Sniper School of Replacement Brig (Mot) General's Hall, Danzig-Langfuer - is actually [Ersatz-Brigade] "Feldherrnhalle", Danzig-Langfuhr

Best regards
Bernd

You're welcome, and thanks for the corrections! While I was copying the list from the book, I suspected that "Okabol", "Langfuer" and "General's Hall" were typographical or translation errors, but due to my only moderate knowledge of the German language I left them as is.

 In addition, one other entry in the book that struck me just as odd was "Replacement Brig (Mot) Greater Germany" - I now am thinking it should instead read "Ersatz-Brigade Großdeutschland". A brief check in the Heer section of the Lexikon der Wehrmacht website verified the existence of that unit at Cottbus.
By all means correct me if I'm wrong about this!

Mit freundlichen Grüßen
Reinhard

Reinhard,

I had given the latter a proper unit designation as well :) , like you correctly said Ersatz-Brigade "GD", Cottbus.

Best regards
Bernd

I thought this might be of interest. A regimental tagesbefehl from Gren.Rgt.392 of the 169 Inf.Div. in Finland dated 31 March 43 listing awards of the EK I and II. Several scharfschütze are amongst those decorated, 1 being awarded the EKI and 2 the EKII

Thanks Simon !

a short side-step : did you ever come across Unteroffizier Gerhard Sieding within GR 392 or 169. ID ?
(NKiG with GR 492 per Dörr, a unit which seems impossible, one guess is 392 maybe)
