My favourite photo:

He is wearing a Winterschlacht im Osten 41/42 ribbon behind his Eisernes Kreuz II. Klas. He also is wearing the 4 Jahr im Treue Dienst in die SS , Die Medaille zur Erinnerung an den 13. Marz 1938 (318,689 recipients) and the Die Medaille zur Erinnering an den 1 Oktober 1939 (1,162,617 recipients) mit Prague Bar (134,563 recipients).

On his chest he is wearing the Infanterie-Sturmabzeichen, Eisernes Kreuz I. Klas and the DRL Sportsabzeichen (?).

Stunning photo!! I see he's wearing a Totenkopf ring as well.
Can't quite make out the writing on the cuff title.

Cheers

Stunning was exactly the word I was going to use for it. A very handsome couple.

I believe it's Langemarck. Sturmkreuz?

Also Sturmkreuz, is the groom a Hauptscharführer?

Another nice senior NCO in Waffenrock photo, Larry. I wonder how he got the Westwall Medal.

Hi Vikki

The West Wall Medal Medal was awarded to troops who helped build the fortifications on Germany's Western borders.
Also awarded to those who were stationed there prior to May 1940.

Infanterie Regiment 56 (as part of 5 Infanterie Division) was stationed in the Eifel area which is near the Belgian border in 1939.

Maybe he was awarded the medal for his time there.

Here is another photo in my collection.

The groom is also wearing the West Wall Medal, the EK2 and a Black Wound Badge. Interestingly he is also wearing an Italian Cross for War Merit/The Cross for Military Valor with a blue and white ribbon .
The ribbon changed to plain blue in 1943.

I don't know what the criteria was for this medal being awarded to German troops.

Cheers
Larry

The bride in these photos looks old enough to be the groom's mother.
She may have been married before and that is why she is not in white.
I have been told that portrait couples that show the woman with flowers but not in white are most probably anniversary
photos.
This may be the case with some photos but there was a shortage of white material for brides dresses especially during the war years and the dresses had to be made from anything that was available, even from curtain material.

Cheers

Superb collection larrister-
Your photo of Feb. 8. 09-I note that what ever the officer was wearing, the medal is gone-perhaps another Italian award post 1943?
The SS photo is extremely rare. The pinnacle of a collection piece.
That last photo where the Italian African campaign medal is missing but the bravery cross is before the Westwall is very good too! It shows another period error. If people saw that today at a medal show they'd assume the bar was a fake.
Great thread.
