Does anyone know who is the American officer pictured with the Manchurian warlord Zhang Zuolin?
To the left is Zhang's son,Zhang Xueliang: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zhang_Xueliang
Likely candidates for the American are:
Brigadier-General William D Connor,Commanding General of US Army forces in China, 1923 to 1926
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Durward_Connor
Brigadier-General Joseph C Castner,Commanding General of US Army forces in China, 1926 to 1929
Who's this with Zhang Zuolin?

Peter,
I think you are correct about Connor:
I made a search in the Google News archives on: "chang tso-lin" "william * connor" and I got a reference to this article in the Chicago Tribune February 27, 1927: "Uncle Sam's Infantry in China" I can only get a snipet view of it (Pay-Per-View, but it says:

Now Connor is mention in that article. Any bets on whether this is the picture caption for exactly this photo?tOUR FRIEND CHANG TSO LIN AGAIN, trick hat and all, receiving a salute from the ... Chang Tso Lin of Manchuria i' at the center. On his right is his son

Thanks Steen,thats great.
George C Marshall commanded the US 15th Regiment under Connor at Tientsin 1924-1927 so we sometimes forget how the Chinese experience moulded the US Army in WW2.Others like Ridgeway and Maxwell Taylor also served under Marshall.
Regards
Peter

That young could be the interpreter or adjutant of Zhang Zuolin, not his son.Peter H wrote: ↑24 Jun 2009, 14:31Does anyone know who is the American officer pictured with the Manchurian warlord Zhang Zuolin?
