RE: Sachs, Volkssturm, DKiG ; AOK 17 [page 80]
hm, no decent reflections/answers yet ; on the "workbench" for now ; edited data set with note :
Sachs, [first name not listed], 00.02.1945, Volkssturm-Btl.Fhr. i. Bereich d. 17. Armee
[he is the Volkssturm-Bataillonsführer (Btl. Hindenburg/Oberschlesien ?) who invented the story of Hitlerjunge Nowak. And his own story, which "earned" him the DKiG. See : http://forum.axishistory.com/viewtopic. ... ilit=Nowak ; listing preliminary until final research (documentation ?) and note is done]
food for thoughts : shouldn't he to be categorated the same like Nowak ?
Sachs is no in P/S, but since the outcome of both volumes more not listed recipients have been discovered. So until undoubtedly proven by primary sources, the suggested mentioning look the best.
RE: Braemer , DKiS [page 80]

Wehrmachtbefehlshaber Ostland

RE: Polizei - Regimenter / Bataillone [page 82]

the section is edited completely. Apart from the listing with the higher headquarter (when known, few gaps), which was done already, they are now listed on their own, too. Additionally there is a section Holders of other notable badges & decorations. This is a start and first attempt to cover those other material - in this case the Bandenkampfabzeichen [Anti-Partisan-Badge].

RE:
RE: DKiG : Krause, Rudolf, 08.05.1945, Leutnant d.R., HJ-Gebietsfhr. 5
thanks Wilco, interesting to see this last day award confirmed.
By chance this could be clarified more in-depth and "just-in-time" ; crossed out from the "grab bag" and new entry added to [page 56] :
HJ (/Volkssturm) units

German Cross in Gold
Krause, Rudolf ("Rudi"), 08.05.1945, Leutnant d.R., Führer Panzerjagdkommando Krause
[= formation (and sent into action by) of HJ-Gebietsführer 5, Stettin (HJ-Gebiet Pommern, Gebietsfhr. Gerd Wegner)]
[action at PYRITZ, southeast of STETTIN, 1.-9. Feb 45 ; attached to Kampfgruppe Weiss / XXXII. AK / Pz.AOK 3]
Here's a short summary of the story of this unit [transl. by me] :
Facing the Soviet advance towards the ODER in late Jan 1945 it became obvious that the cut-off of the retreating troops in Pommerania and the taking away of the Oder bridges at Stettin would cause a very critical situation. Especially for the trecks with thousands of civilians on their way westwards.
As part of the defensive measures taken, the Volkssturm was called to form hastily. The nucleus of Panzerjagdkommando Krause comprised of 48 Hitlerjungen from Stettin and Stralsund ; so-called HJ-Volkssturm, Jahrgang 1928. Leutnant d.R. Rudi Krause, a former Panzerjäger Lt. (Eastern Front) was given command of this Kdo. at Stettin. With receiving cloth, weapons, ammunition, a short weapons instruction during this first night the boys, 16 to 18 years of age, were sent south-eastwards towards PYRITZ on 31 Jan 45 with trucks. Their task, as part of other ad-hoc defensive troops, was not less than to stop the Soviets (2. Garde-Pz.Armee) attacking towards Stettin from south-east direction. The heaviest weapon they were equipped with was the Panzerfaust. From 1 Feb until 9 Feb 1945 (relieved and marched back to Stettin, Kdo. dissolved until end of Feb finally) the Kdo. fought a successfull hand-to-hand and house-to-house battle at PYRITZ. The city couldn't be taken and overrun by the Soviets during these first days of february.
Attached to Kampfgruppe Weiss = Kampfkommandant PYRITZ (Oberst Otto Weiß, Lw, OL holder) the average strength of the unit was around 100 men and comprised of :
- appr. 48 HJ boys , from Stetting and Stralsund
- appr. 40 Hitler-Jugend-Schüler , from Tilsit (those volunteered to join the Kdo., when met on the march towards Pyritz)
- appr. 20 men from Unteroffiziersschule Stargard , some experienced NCOs (joined the Kdo.)
- one U-Boot crew, appr. 20 men with two officers (sent from Stetting to strengthen the Kdo.)
- a number of older Volkssturm men

Krause reports that his deputy cdr. George Straßburg (received the EK1 for Pyritz) was amongst those Volkssturm and HJ men who were at Berlin to visit and to be honored by Hitler, when the last Wochenschau was recorded on 22 March 45 (he himself was in a Lazarett seriously ill at that time).

The report contains the original German Cross in Gold proposal for Krause
- Korps level , based on the proposal by Kampfgruppe Weiss, Stettin, 14 Feb 1945 -
with positive comment by Gen.Kdo. XXXII. AK (Gen. Schack), March 45 .

It is to state, that a presentation of the award is not mentioned as well as further "paper work" is not shown. Is it the humbleness of the author Krause, or is it (most likely) he wasn't well informed or aware of the award - award has to be regarded as finally confirmed via Patzwall/Scherzer, with date 08.05.1945.

Supplement to the above : Rudi Krause , DKiG

added to the text in brackets :
Kgr. Weiss attached to : Division "Denecke" (or "Gruppe Denecke") until 7 Feb 45 ; 4. SS-Pol.-Pz.Gren.Div. since 7 Feb 45
During Feb 7th 45 a change of command took place : Div. Denecke did take over the command on "Brückenkopf Greifenhagen" and was replaced by the 4. SS-Pol.PGD in the Pyritz Abschnitt. On Feb 15th Abschnitt Pyritz (overall HKL of appr. 25km) was overtaken by "Denecke" again (with a completely different composition of troops then).

Re: Awardholders / unit

Could be the last, but for sure one of the last review rounds I'm on with regard to the 7300+ RKT and all their major awards. The goal is to check for completeness and the accuracy of the listings (elimination of errors / typos / etc.).

Here is a first series of listings with issues / ommissions detected and where a final add&corr is raised and the final data set is on the agenda for a decision.

1) Kurt Albrecht , RK : GR 948
the issue is the date of his AU ; 28. ID [page 4]
current listing in red - data set in blue per Biblio Verlag KC series, Infanterie :
Albrecht, Kurt, 07.01.1943 (1458), Major, Btl. Kdr. Jäg.Rgt. 83
AnerkU (1485 ): 03.12.42, Maj d. Res, Kmdr. I./ JägRgt 83/ 28. ID/ 18. Armee/ HGr Nord, Tat bei Ssinjawino am 04.09.42
Veit Scherzer, "RKT", 2005 ed., provides the date "03.12.1942", too. If there is no objection I will change the date.

There is another discrepancy concerning his "Nennung im Ehrenblatt".
359. ID [page 23] :
Albrecht, Kurt, 05.10.1944, Oberst, Gren.Rgt. 948
Ehrenblatt ( 4106 ): 31.10.44, Oberst, Kmdr. GrenRgt 948/ 359. ID/ XXXXVIII PzK/ ArmeeGr Heinrici/ HGr Nordukraine, Tat bei Dunajow 22.07.44
listing in blue ; same date per V.S. ; the below "31.10.44" is what Biblio provides ; this is another "2:1 count" of data availbable in favour of the "05.10." date ! Seriously, without taking a look into files - can this be clarified ? I tend to the date listed.

2) Kurt Bodendörfer , RK : GR 689
received two Anerkennungsurkunden ; listed is one only at the moment ; 46. ID [page 34] :
edited data set right now :
Bodendörfer, Kurt, 14.08.1942 (1162), Hauptmann, Kdr. I./Inf.Rgt. 97
AU ( 1162 ): Hptm., Kmdr. I./ IR 97/ 46. ID/ 11. Armee/ HGr. A, Tat bei Sewastopol 17.06.42
(Biblio KC series)
AU ( 1400 ): Hptm., gleiche Einheit wie vor [I./IR 97], Tat im Kaukasus 25.- 28.10.42

2nd AU , date per Scherzer, RKT : 08.11.1942
If there is no objection I will add the second AU with date "08.11.1942" and unit per Scherzer and Biblio.

3) Hans-Otto Brandt , RK : IR 67
of note : EBS ; was named two times in the "Ehrenblatt des deutschen Heeres" , first time with 23. ID first formation, second time with 23. Infanterie-Division (Neu) ; listed correctly, I just made a slight edit of the data sets ;
23. ID [page 30] :
Brandt, Hans-Otto, 08.08.1941 [1. Nennung / first naming], Leutnant, 10./Inf.Rgt. 67
...
Brandt, Hans-Otto, 05.10.1943 [2. Nennung im "Ehrenblatt" p.m. / 2nd naming posthumous], Hauptmann, I./Gren.Rgt. 67
for completion : as mentioned before, 2nd naming Yes, Honor Roll Clasp awarded basically only once.

Sources within the text above.

Best regards,
thanks for any check/comfirmation per other references / literature,
Bernd :D

Correction : KC
Körner, Helmut 03.12.1943 Leutnant d.R. Zugführer i. d. 2./Sturm-Pz.Abt. 216 [= 2./III.]/Pz.Jäg.Rgt 656
The edited data set denotes the correct unit of Körner, who is commonly listed with "2./Pz.Jg.Rgt. 656" (official files and secondary sources). He was not Kdt. of a "Ferdinand" (would be designated 2./656 [= 2./s.Pz.Jg.Abt. 653 / Rgt. 656 ], but Kdt. of a Sturmpanzer "Brummbär".
See : Helmut Körner (KC), Sturmpanzer-Abt. 216
Thanks to Gastolli (Oliver) !!

The entries for s.Pz.Jg.Abt. 653 and 654 and s.He.-Pz.Jg.Rgt. 656 on [page 5] are edited completely. Both 653 and 654 are listed entirely on their own as well as with 656 while assigned during "Zitadelle". By that double entries in contrast to the somewhat artifial distinction "with and not with 656" before.
Also added on its own is Sturmpanzer-Abteilung 216. Sturmpanzer-Abt. 216, 217 and 219 have parallel entries on [p 5] and on [page 20] in the bigger Pz. section for the time being.

Correction : DKiG

Crossed out from 253. Inf.Div. [page 21] and added to s.Pz.Jg.Abt. 653 [page 5] :
Flintrop, Wilhelm, 27.04.1945, Feldwebel d.R., Geschütz- u. Zugführer i. d. 1./s.Pz.Jäg.Abt. 653
[per/see Verleihungsvorschlag, BArch RH 7 / 309]
Prior to his assignment to "653" since 1 Apr 1943 he was a Geschütz- und Zugführer in StuGAbt 197. Being a Kommandant of a "Ferdinand" in Russia and Italy then, he was to become a Kommandant of a Jagdtiger with 1./653 in the last month of the war. The German Cross in Gold proposal/award summarizes his successful actions throughout the years 1943-45 at three different theatres (Russia, Italy, Germany).

Correction done on base of info/material provided by gastolli (Oliver), many thanks for this one !! :D
For a short spot (with Flintrop named) on Münchs 653 Combat History see here for example :
http://books.google.de/books?id=eONpj6g ... t&resnum=2

This makes (previous check and request on [page 154])
Flintrop, Wilhelm, 27.04.1945, Feldwebel d.R., 2./Pz.Jäg.Abt. 253 / 253. ID
"Listed as per Scheibert" ; "Patzwall/Scherzer give the 2./Pz.Jäg.Abt. 253"
to be the same error/same typo in the secondary sources.

Best regards
Bernd

RE : Albrecht, Bodendörfer, Brandt
the data sets are edited according to the notes above.

Here is the next series of listings with issues / ommissions detected and where a final add&corr is raised and the final data set is on the agenda for a decision. Includes data sets of note (for confirmations or to rule out objections).

1) Hans-Joachim Doergens , RK: Pi.Btl. 225
just because it's a typo in Scherzer, "RKT", 1st ed. 2005 ; and the DKiG is not mentioned there
here are the correct entries for RK and DKiG :
KC, 225. ID [page 29] :
Pionier – Bataillon 225 :
13. Doergens, Hans-Joachim 26.06.1944 Hauptmann d.R. Führer Pi.Btl 225
DKiG, 81. ID [page 16] :
Doergens, Hans-Joachim, 21.03.1943, Oberleutnant d.B., 3./Pi.Btl. 181
of note : started as an officer "des Beurlaubtenstandes", was to become an officer "der Reserve". Finished his military career in the FRG Bundeswehr with final rank Oberstleutnant.

2) Bernhard Kuhna , RK: II./IR 508
of note : beside the KC, received three "Urkunden"
two with 292. ID [page 17] :
Commendation Certificate of the Commander-in-Chief of the Army for Shooting Down Aircraft
Kuhna, Bernhard, 16.05.1942 (58), Oberleutnant, 4./Inf.Rgt. 508
Kuhna, Bernhard, 16.05.1942 (58a), Oberleutnant, 4./Inf.Rgt. 508
one with Pz.Gren.Div. "FHH" [page 17]
Commendation Certificate of the Commander-in-Chief of the Army
Kuhna, Bernhard, 27.05.1944 (3368), Major, Kdr. II./Gren.Rgt. “FHH”

August Machowsky , RK: Jäg.Rgt. 28 / 8. Jäg.Div. [page 4]
KC :
Machowsky, August 30.04.1945 Oberleutnant Chef 17.(Pi.)/Jäg.Rgt 28
Question / confirmation : correctly listed with the "Ehrenblattspange" (resp. "Ehrenblatt"), this is not a DKiG ?

Machowski, August, 15.12.1944, Leutnant, Inf.Pi.Kp./Jäg.Rgt. 28
Bernd,

This is the EBS data per Scheibert. Machowski is not listed in Scheibert as a DKiG holder.

Thanks Shawn !

Here is another single re-check. Did we miss eventually a German Cross in Silver for him. Date "22.04.1943" per V.S. I didn't find him with the Luftwaffe staff commands on page 82 (also done a search with "Gottlob").
