that's an interesting question. Somehow one gets the feeling that the people at the party court didn't intend to get their hands any dirtier than they already were. Lucky for her that she did not meet any hot-heads there trying to stage a warning example.

I found some information on another Gaufrauenschaftsleiterin, Anna Kottenhoff, who was GFL in Salzburg in 1942. Here is what I have though it's a bit contradictory:

Anna Hulda Wilhelmine Kottenhoff

Anna Dammer-Kottenhoff.jpg
Anna Dammer-Kottenhoff.jpg (125.37 KiB) Viewed 9715 times
born Nov. 24th, 1907 in Hagen-Haspe (Westphalia)

father: Gustav Eugen Kottenhoff, merchant (according to other sources industrialist), born Aprl 10th, 1880 in Hagen-Haspe
mother: Anna Klara Kottenhoff, nee Kreft, born Aprl 2nd, 1886 in Hagen-Haspe

According to Grüttner (1995, p.508) Kottenhoff finished highschool ('Abitur') in Dortmund in 1932 and then started studying law. OTOH according to Manns (1997, p.334) Kottenhoff already joined the the NSDStB (Nazi Students' League) around 1930 so she must have been at some kind of university or academy already then. [In German 'Studenten' always means university students. People going to school are called 'Schüler' and it's hard to understand how a pupil would be allowed into a student league.] Röwekamp (2005, p.364) follows Manns' version and writes about a change to the law faculty in 1932.

According to Manns and Röwekamp Kottenhoff was also active in the SA-Hilfe (storm trooper aid) from 1930 - 1932.

All sources then agree that in 1932 Kottenhoff started to study law at the university of Innsbruck, later changing to Heidelberg.

From 1933 to 1935: Kottenhoff belonged to the law faculty student council ('Fachschaft') as well as the general student council of Heidelberg University. She also spearheaded a group of female law students (of varying politcal denominations) that protested against the bad employment opportunities for lawwomen in Berlin (repeated resolutions to the Reichsfrauenführung and the Ministry of Justice).

July 31st, 1935: Kottenhoff passes the law exam (1. Staatsexamen) in Karlsruhe and follows Prof. Reinhard Höhn to Berlin university. Höhn, who according to Röwekamp was respected very much by Kottenhoff, had been appointed head of the newly founded Institut für Staatsforschung (losely translated: Institute for State Theory) in Berlin.

1935/36: Besides continuing her studies Kottenhoff is also active in the local law faculty student council again.

January 1936: She becomes Höhn's assistant in the Institute for State Theory.

August 1936: Kottenhoff starts her state traineeship (Referendariat) for lawmen in Berlin. Parallel to that she heads the sectors 'Law' and 'Economics' in the Office for Science and Professional Education of the Reichsstudentenführung (Reich Student Council).

November 1936: Full-time consultant for science and professional education in the female students department of the Reichsstudentenführung.

1937: Kottenhoff becomes member of the NSDAP.

December 1937: Kottenhoff obtains a doctorate of law from Heidelberg university.

January 1938 till January 1939: Deputy Reich consultant of the ANSt and Gau consultant of the ANSt for Brandenburg.
( ANSt = Arbeitsgemeinschaft Nationalsozialistischer Studentinnen, literally study group of National Socialist female students, i.e the female part of the Nazi Students League).

Feb 1st, 1939: Kottenhoff is promoted to Reich consultant of the ANSt and head of the Office 'Female Students' in the German Student Council.

May 15th, 1941: Kottenhoff becomes managing director of the office 'Science and Professional Education' in the Reich Student Council.

Early 1942: After Gustav Adolf Scheel, the Reich students' führer, has been apppointed to Gauleiter of Salzburg he brings several young talents from the Reich Students Council with him to Salzburg. Kottenhoff becomes Gaufrauenschaftsleiterin.

April 8th, 1942: Kottenhoff marries journalist Günther Dammer (born Mar 4th, 19121 in Berlin). Her family name changes either to Dammer or Dammer-Kottenhoff, depending on your source.

Late 1942: For unknown reasons Kottenhoff resigns from all offices and functions keeping just her leadership in the 'Hochschulgemeinschaft Deutscher Frauen' (University Guild of German Women).

Late war and post-war time unknown. At an unknown point of time the couple changes the family name to 'Schmidtdammer'. (Or just Günther Dammer changes the family name to 'Schmidtdammer' after the death of Anna?)

April 30th, 1957: Kottenhoff completes the state traineeship for lawmen in Düsseldorf and opens a lawyer's office there the next year.

May 24th, 1969: Kottenhoff suddenly dies in Büderich near Düsseldorf.

Oct 30th, 2004: Günther Schmidtdammer dies in Meerbusch-Büderich

Hello Helge,

the retouching is indeed totally obvious. If there's something to hide it's hard to understand why it was done so absolutely sloppily that it will fool only those having a very quick glance over the photo.

Something different: found the following list of Gaufrauenschaftsleiterinnen in Fabricius & Stamm (1935, p.61) which has some new names and is a good complement to the lists for later years here http://forum.axishistory.com/viewtopic. ... 80#p998080.

Hello,

here are some details on Gaufrauenschaftsleiterin Helene Werdeling, mainly from Sawahn (2005, p.523, footnote 550).

Helene Werdeling, nee Howe

born in 1903
died in 1975

profession: farm wife

joins NS Frauenschaft on July 1st, 1933 (NSF No. 813.220)
joins NSDAP on May 1st, 1937 (NSDAP No. 4.444.629)

In 1937 Werdeling became (as a volunteer) head of the department IC of the Landesbauernschaft Westphalia.
(Landesbauernschaft = representatin of the Reichsnährstand on the provincial level).
(Reichsnährstand = association of all persons and companies involved in food production and food processing)

Gauschulungsrednerin (Gau instruction orator)

On Nov 1st, 1941 Scholtz-Klink ordered Werdeling to begin building-up a department for farm wives in the NS Frauenschaft.

Subsequently Gaufrauenschaftsleiterin in the Gau Westfalen-Nord.

In 1944 Werdeling was additionally appointed to representative for recruitment of new members and professional instruction.

After WWII she was incarcerated in the British concentration camp at Staumühle till 1947 where she played
a prominent role in the inner (German) camp administration (Michel, 2007, footnote 100).

According to Albers (2001, p.318) Helene Werdeling was from Sellen, County Burgsteinfurt (today County Steinfurt). This led me to the following 1955 picture of her.

According to the caption of another photo from 1965 (http://www.sellen-veltrup.de/4557/jubil ... 2_1209.php) Werdeling was a teacher at the local primary school in Sellen.

In 1966 Werdeling was elected head of the Burgsteinfurt locale of the farm wives association (Landfrauenbund) where she put special emphasis on the instruction of the farm girls (Drunkenmöller, 2008).

Helene Werdeling died in 1975.

Hi,

here comes the next one, Gaufrauenschaftleiterin Elsbeth Frick of Gau München-Oberbayern. She actually was the wife of Wilhelm Frick, the Reich minister of the interior from 1933 till 1943 (Neliba, 1992, p.24, footnote 14).

Frau Frick was born as Elisabetha Emilie Nagel on April 27th, 1890. Her father was a shoe wholesaler. She married Wilhelm Frick on April 25th, 1910 in Pirmasens (the centre of German shoe production) but the marriage ended in an ugly divorce on Feb. 1st, 1934 in Berlin.

The couple had two sons and one daughter. One of the sons, Walter, died of wounds in Russia on July 29th, 1941.

Elsbeth Frick died on Oct 25th, 1978.

Here's a photo from Leutheusser (2001, p.34) showing her during a 1937 convention of the NS Frauenschaft in Munich.

Great photo find. I wondered if she was the relative or wife of Interior Minister Frick. I didn't know about his divorce. Interesting how she was able to find a high position as a functionary of the womens organisation despite having the stigma [for the times] of being a divorcee.

Hello Matt,

you really touched an interesting subject with your remark about divorce. The National Socialists (at least the NS Frauenschaft) appear not have had a problem with that. From the very limited of number of Gaufrauenschaftleiterinnen CVs we have so far the following divorcees emerge:

- Meta Mischka-Grahe (divorce in 1920)
- Else Muhr-Jordan (divorce in 1927)
- Elsbeth Frick (divorce in 1934)
- Gertrud Scholtz-Klink (divorce in 1937)

It seems this was neither an obstacle to becoming Gaufrauenschaftsleiterin (GFL) nor to keeping the position. On the other hand one has to keep in mind that till 1937 the GFLs were volunteer workers and it may have been difficult to find replacements suitable and with a sufficient income from other sources.

The interesting thing about Elsbeth Frick is that she kept her position even despite the bitterness of her divorce from her influential husband. The GFLs were primarily dependent on the trust of their individual Gauleiter so if Elsbeth kept her job that also may tell us something about what Adolf Wagner thought of Wilhelm Frick.

Best regards

A local historian from Schöppenstedt did a number of interviews with her till into the 1960s but Mischka-Grahe would always just indulge in reminescences of her theatrical career.

Feb. 7th, 1973 Mischka-Grahe dies in a pensioner's home in Brunswick.

I saw that you interested a lot about the Gaufrauenschaftsleiterin Terboven.

Well her name ist Wilhelmine Terboven, she was born 13.12.1890 and she was the sister of the Gauleiter Terboven.

Wilhelmine was active in Essen, by her brother and went to Lüneburg (Gau Osthannover) in november 1936. Since then she was applied GFL in Kòln.

first name Wilhelmine confirmed in Sawahn (2009, p.468, footnote 266).

Torsten;
Thanks for that very informative post. I am guilty of thinking more generally about pre war social mores in the UK. It is very interesting to note your observation of what Wagner possibly thought about the background to the divorce of Frick. I hadn't noticed the number of those high ranking women in the NSF who were divorcees.

I just realised in browsing on the topic about women who held the Golden Party Badge that there seems to be a large percentage of the Gaufrauenschaftsführerin there. As Michael Millers post mentions "honorary" holders of the award, was it considered a requisite of such a senior position that the women promoted or given the post that they should be given the award, as a form or reward for service perhaps? I wonder now how many of them might have held party long service awards as well.

Hello,

found several more names of Gaufrauenschaftsleiterinnen in two lists for 1930 and 1932 that are in Arendt et al. (1995, pp.327). Unfortunately there's no information on what primary sources these lists are based on and they appear not to contain a name for each Gau. For simplicty I have just taken the 1935 list of Gaue from an earlier post to indicate possible gaps. Real perfection would of course require to dig into the history of how the Reich was seperated into Gaue.
Also interesting is that in 1930 the title of these women seems to have been Gauführerin while in 1932 it was Gauleiterin.
