According to my recent researches, SS-Polizei-Btl. 15 suffered big losses there on that date. Anyone knows in which operation they were involved?
thanks

Hi BKG,

On 2.2.44 a Polizei/MDT motorized column was ambushed in Komen. Many losses on the Axis side.
I couldn't be able to understand anyway if the fallen Polizei members were from SS-Pol.-Rgt. 15.
As reprisal for 02.02.44 event on 15.02.45 FSSB Globocnik was involved in the "Unternehmen Ratte" against Komen and Rifemberg, both the villages were burnt down and severals suspects were sent to hard laborus.
Units of SS.Pol.-Rgt.15 took part to that Unternehmen.

Cheers

HI Tom
thanks for the reply!
I would say that probably 15. SS-Polizei Btl. took action, because they suffered casualties ( I counted about a dozen men at least) on that date/location.

Footnote: there are differences in some surnames according to various sources;

In the ambush were involved 8 trucks, 1armoured Fiat 655 , 49 men (2 officers) of the Special OP battalion Trieste of the 1st MDT regiment (see the above list); 2 enlisted of the Tagliamento regiment and 34 (2 officers) of the III/15 SS Polizei regiment. All were killed, including Major der Schupo Bodo FASS (c.o. of the SS Pol. Btl.) and Hauptmann Hans MAIER (c.o. of 12th Coy.). The only survivors were the mountain trooper Angelo MARCATO, who died in the Gorizia hospital (as a result of the received wounds) and the mountain trooper Bruno BENEDETTI, who was admitted to the Military Hospital of Trieste for some wounds to his left wrist, shoulder and right hand. But his appointment with fate was only postponed, because he fell in combat in the autumn 1944, as belonging to the Vipacco battalion of the Tagliamento regiment. The confusion of the total losses, according to the various sources, is due to the fact that many bodies had been dismembered and burned beyond recognition and there were some disappeared, never found italian and german personnel. The ambush, which lasted five hours, was conducted by III/ Južnoprimorski odred of the Gregorčičeva brigada, led by Anton Šibelja-Stjenka (1914-1945, declared as a national hero from the Slavic communists on 12/14/1949), which in turn suffered 7 KIA and 8 WIA. The first to arrive on the scene after the ambush was 4./ SS Karstwehr btl., led by SS Ustuf. Erich Kuhbandner, but the partisans had already vanished.

Good evening

After a long absence due to my job:
I have to add to the above list:
NCOs Carisi Gabriele, born in Fiume on 1920; Fabiani Giovanni, born in Trieste on 1898; Gari Umberto, born in La Spezia on 1911; Romano Antonio (not sure)
sergeants & enlisted Brioschi Alberto born in Monza on 1921; Marcato Angelo born in Monselice on 1914; Moscatelli Ascanio; Urbino Enea born in Visinada d'Istria on 1927; Valentini Tullio.

I had forgotten that in the column there were 11 soldiers, belonging to the garrison of Komen, who had joined it as a reinforcement for the rest of the way up to Rifembergo. So to summarize, according to the most reliable sources: at the departure from Trieste there were 47 Italians; 34 Germans were aggregated in Opicina and finally 11 Italians at the departure from Komen. Total 92 of which only one survivor. Finally, I must say that in the various lists that I have, there are some minor differences with respect to the names of the fallen Italian soldiers.
