Re: The "Destroyed bunkers" thread
There was a story in the Kyiv Post some weeks ago (26th August) about turning Hitler's wehrwolf bunker complex in the Vinnytsia Oblast, Ukraine, into a memorial/historical attraction with guided tours. The bunker complex was for the most part blown up by the retreating German forces but some sizeable concrete and steel ruins still exist.

Bunker "Anton" in Merzig/Saarland/Germany is history...
Sorry for the late statement but I was very busy and sick for a long time.
Since 10.08.11, WH 116 Bunker "Anton"- the small Museum is history...
It was destroyed in order to built a new street...
Here some picture from "Anton" before-after...

Re: The "Destroyed bunkers" thread
Some bad news from Belgium...
During the demolition of a holiday bungalow's park in De Panne (KVA3, Belgium) in december 2011, the roofs of severals bunkers became visible. We rushed out immediately to make several fieldtrips there to dig out the bunkers for measurement and photography before they disappear again under new constructions, but their final fate is worst that we thought: demolishment. One of the two ammo bunkers and half of the 502 are gone already, some brick covered trenches have met their fate as wel during the works. More information about this strongpoint (Stp Wrangel) on the following link: http://www.atlantikwall.tk/. See also the pictures movie of our excavation on the site.
Greetings
Pierrot

Re: The "Destroyed bunkers" thread
Hello Jack,
The LAG with the house on top has been recently bought by the town of Koksijde. Although this bunker is not (yet)protected as monument, they have no intention to destroy it, they want to re-use it for the local windsurfing club I think.

If you want to protect a site you must not stand alone, It is better to unite a group of people with the same ideals.
Furthermore the coorporation of the local government is crucial, if they do not see the importance.....you'd better stop right away.
In our beautifull Holland most counties where bunkers were built they are not protected, last years luckily it gets better but sometimes unique or special bunker(types) were demolished.
In the Netherlands i recall the V149 of Utrecht (widening of a road), 625B at Scheveningen (traffictunnel cunstruction), communicationsbunker at the Servaesbolwerk also in Utrecht (houses), 633 at Breskens (houses -started illegally-), Zandvoort several bunkers were demolished because they were under the boulevard and they were making parkingspaces and in 2 years the Wn's 31 and 33 in Hoek van Holland (industry -started illegally- and road) and in Julianadorp they demolished a 621 and 134, and some other bunkers.
There are also a lot good initiatives but it takes a lot of time and effort to preserve them for future generations.
Greetings Jack.
& liability cost, Jack!
One of the difficulties you face in preservation for war buildings is the cost of ‘all perils insurance’ which has skyrocketed, in Western Canada, for BCATP wooden heritage hangars. When was a child, the ‘age of reading’ was the determinant for liability- if you had a stout locked fence & no trespassing signage you were ‘ok’. Arson by juveniles carried real penalties.
In this age of lawyers & ‘perpetual adolescence’, a landowner has to take a good long look at preservation VRS the risk of being bankrupted by a court case, or carrying expensive property insurance.
The result has been the quick demolition of those wonderful BCATP heritage hangars, & permanent tearing up of the runways.
A starting point for preservation is landholder relied & exemption legislation, & perils coverage.
& perhaps, public stocks for guys in toques caught ‘urban exploring’
