Attempt at a complete list of German General PoWs 1941-1945

#1

Post by askropp » 05 Sep 2014, 11:25

Starting today, I will try to compile a complete list of German general officers captured by enemy forces between 1941 and 1945. I will not include retired officers and officers only promoted to general's rank in captivity, and I will end with the date of Hitler's suicide because we would have a whole flood of prisoners from the various surrenders in May 1945.

I'm thankful for any additions and / or corrections!

Explanatory note: I'm reasonably sure about the dates and locations of the troop commanders. Schnarrenberger claimed himself to have been captured on 11 May, so I take him by his word. Köchy is the most difficult case, sometimes also said to have been captured as late as 13 May. This is hard to believe as the units in the Tunis to Enfidaville sector surrendered roughly from north to south and Köchy should have been at the airfields near Tunis when the final Allied offensive began. Does anyone know which airfield was the last HQ of Flughafenbereich 5/XIII?

Hello,

a very interesting collection. I'd like to add

Generalleutnant Fritz von Brodowski

Correct is:
Jahrgang, 1992, S. 319].

Thanks to both of you. List has been corrected. I have to admit I never heard of the Brodowski case, I still had him listed as "gefallen".

I remember that Himmler expelled Hilmar Moser from the SS because he had surrendered to the Red Army.
What did he say about the Dunckern case?

Regarding the Eastern Front in 1944, there are some troubles with the correct dates because sources (like Bezborodova etc.) sometimes give contradictory or impossible dates. As it seems, the time at which a captured general entered Soviet files is not always identical with the date on which he was captured. Things are made even more problematic by the fact that some generals were initially captured by Romanian or Bulgarian forces and handed over to the Red Army later. Nevertheless, I will try to give a list based on my current knowledge. Additions and corrections are always welcome.

Thanks for this, The collapse of Army Group Centre in June- July 44 and then Romania in August 44 really tore apart their command ranks in addition to the loss of men and equipment.
