Re: officier of the SS freiw Gebirgsjäger Division 7 Prinz Eugen
And who would be a poster boy for the Waffen SS, I wonder?
On the subject of the Order Police in Poland. I've just read Browning's "Ordinary Men" (1992), a vastly better book than Goldhagen's, despite, or perhaps because of, its much more limited ambitions. Browning did not use any of the real names of the Hamburg Order Police in his book, which was a condition of his being allowed access to their files. Now that they are presumably all dead, have the real names been revealed?

Re: officier of the 7. SS-Freiw.-Gebirgs-Division "Prinz Eugen"
Hi,
About Otto Meckelburg, was he the commander of the III./SS-Rgt. 14 at the time of the Otok's massacre?
Otto KUMM wrote about this massacre in his book "Vorwärts Prinz Eugen" edited by Munin Verlag.
In fact there are 3 villages, Otok, Ruda and Dolac Dolnji and thy were 834 victims, including many women and children. But only Dietsche is named in a document from the IMT. (source IMT Document D-945 "testimony of Paul Hausser")
Otto KUMM speaks of court martialled and aquitted commander.
Does it appear in the file of Meckelburg?
What was the ultimate fate of Meckelburg after the war?
Regards
Patrick

Isn't he SS-Stubaf in that picture that Harmel posted on page 1???
I cannot claim at the moment whether that is in fact Meckelburg in that picture since the face isn't really visible (but judging by that one photo it doesn't look like him to me), but if it is indeed him it cannot be early spring 1943 since he was promoted to Stubaf. in November that year.phactr wrote:The SS-Sturmbannführer who is in the front cover of 39-45 Magazine is indeed Otto Meckelburg. When this photograph was taken (early spring 1943), he was one of the youngest officers within the division's Gebirgsjäger-Regimenter. This picture comes from the US National Archives.
However, these NARA photos from May 1943 do show what Otto Meckelburg looked like (with/without headgear): Meckelburg after the war: Cheers,

Re: officier of the 7. SS-Freiw.-Gebirgs-Division "Prinz Eugen"
...and this is a very interesting historical document including Meckelburg: this is (future) capital of Montenegro, Podgorica, on 22 May 1943, after Kampfgruppe Meckelburg captured it. The honour guard composed of members of Meckelburg's III/2 is being inspected by General Lüters. Behind him is SS-Hstuf. Meckelburg, with SS-Gruf. Phleps on the extreme left.
Podgorica suffered terribly during the war (it was bombed numerous times) and most of the old buildings were destroyed - which is why documents like this one, showing the old city, are additionally interesting.
Cheers,
Ivan

Re: 7. "Prinz Eugen"
Again, I cannot see clearly enough whether that is in fact Brichze, but that person's rank is SS-Ustuf. not SS-Hstuf.harmel wrote:From the same Mag,which I will certainly order,

Any info on Brichze, especially his pre-Handschar service?

Re: Prinz Eugen
This "Otto Meckelburg" is in fact most likely Richard Kaaserer (Kdr. I./2) in late 1942.harmel wrote:Hi Tje,Phil Mike etc, here is a nice action photo

Old thread.
On first page names was asked about a couple of soldiers. I can now ad SS-Stubaf. Josef Kikel.

Re: Officers of the 7. SS-Freiw.-Gebirgs-Division "Prinz Eugen"
The officers are SS-Ustuf. Anton Wickl (SS-KB-Zug commander) and SS-Ustuf. Viktor Brack (division O2).
A better view of Brack's face: Cheers,
Ivan
