Thanks,

Guess that explains why the Lilienthalgesellschaft Pzgr. 39 penetration curve appears a bit more optimistic. Happen to know if the Lilienthalgesellschaft curve is based on actual penetration test data in its upper spectrum of ca. 1270 m/s with Pzgr. 39? Seems possible with e.g. one of those 10,5 cm sabot shells.

There are pictures of the plate, so yes I think there is data.

Thanks again,

Was there any mention what gun was used to achieve the plus 1000 m/s MVs?

I would assume a test fixture. But, that might be possible since you mention it. That is, something like a long barrel 105mm firing the sabot round.

Just for curiosity, I've used the data that we have about the performance of this shell to estimate its performance at low obliquity.

This report mentions this shell defeating 76mm/20° of US RHA when fired from the M3 gun. These estimates place the ballistic limit for such target made from german testing plate at 620m/s (2034fps), which confirms my intuition.

The article from where the figure was taken states that this performance is obtained from 1943 mass production AP shells.
I wouldn’t call it optimistic but rather accurate.
