Worst War Movies?
Re: Worst War Movies?
Delta Force (1986)
Chuck Norris and Lee Marvin enter Beirut on a secret mission…and then proceed to kill terrorists with bazookas while offering up corny one-liners without any emotion. Of course, this was never supposed to be a serious war or action movie - but even as an action film, it's poorly done.

I liked everything about the 'Fury'... until they started fighting at the crossroads.

That last battle was seriously stupid.
Also the Waffen SS infantry behaving like Zulus and running to the battle.

Worst US made War Movies:
The Battle of the Bulge - just awful despite a great cast. A testament to the cynicism of Hollywood, film in Spain, under blue skies, on a flat plain, using post WWII US tanks with German crosses painted on them. Yeah, everyone will buy that - who cares if the real battle was in mid-Winter with heavy skies over a snow covered forest.
(I dislike Patton Lust for Glory for the same movie lazyness in using post war US built tanks with a German cross painted on them)
The Dirty Dozen started great - just badly executed final "battle". (the scene with Clint Walker and Lee Marvin and the bayonet was pretty dumb but everything else worked well until the silly battle at the end. I was hoping for a blood bath like The Wild Bunch ending but was sadly disappointed.
I'm not sure Pearl Harbor qualifies as a war movie - it's more a romance than anything else - like a dumbed down "From Here to Eternity"
The Thin Red Line was BORING.
Windtalkers was crap because of John Woo's obsession with loud explosions. Plus Nicholas Cage.
There's an interesting story there but this wasn't the way to tell it
Fly Boys and Red Tails are both wastes of celluloid
I didn't like Hacksaw Ridge - I just couldn't get invested in the characters and found the action scenes just unbelievable
I didn't like We Were Soldiers mostly because the Vietnamese went to the same Star Wars and 1960's movies German stormtrooper school of marksmanship.
Saving Private Ryan is still the best made war movie IMO, albeit with Spielberg's sentimentality. I still can't watch the scene when the German skin head soldiers kills the Jewish Ranger while Upham stands motionless on the stairs.

Re: Worst War Movies?
What was particularly ridiculous and unrealistic about "Battle of the Bulge" was the battle damage suffered by that M24 tank - the turret seems to be partially melted, like a little plastic toy tank that somebody held a match to.
And by some miracle the crew, or at least the commander, escaped unhurt.

The Guns of Navarone is my favorite WW2 movie. I just had to say that. And if you don't like it, I don't want to hear it.

Re: Worst War Movies?
Battle of Santa Ana is the worse modern warfilm I have seen. I refer to when a modicum of accuracy is part of war film making.
The ending with the "good" German officer giving the wounded American soldier a pistol so he can defend himself against "bad" Germans.

Re: Worst War Movies?
I would say it is very hard to beat the three following, though in many ways it is hard to decide which is worst as all are appalling in their own ways;
U-571
Pearl Harbor
The Battle of the Bulge
U-571
Pearl Harbor
The Battle of the Bulge
Re: Worst War Movies?
How is The Patriot only mentioned once in this thread? A film with ridiculous battle scenes that resembles the 20th Century mixed with the 18th Century. Mel Gibson basically made an American version of Braveheart - except much worse. The British are shown to be unstoppable and yet they are also totally incompetent at the same time, and the historically false massacre in the church by the Dragoons was the last line to completely break with reality.
Uncommon Valor is another must miss movie, how many Americans were unfortunate enough to have seen this film? Basically just another 80's propaganda piece of ****. After 45 years it is clear that those soldiers who were listed as MIA were in fact KIA and their bodies were never recovered from those battlefields.

Re: Worst War Movies?
I realize there are more crappy films than good ones. Even excellent films like A Bridge Too Far had awful moments. Some of the films we enjoyed as kids did not age well once we gained maturity and knowledge. My younger brother for many years presumed Germans spoke English as in the war films with outrageous or British accents too. hahahaha And [big breath] some accurate war films are dreadfully boring. you know I mean Tora, Tora, Tora, which is interminable for me to watch. Sorry about that.
