The only time I saw a gun have that much flame was on a night shoot with 105mm Light Guns on my last live firing exercise before leaving the army.

When it fired it looked like a big firework with all the flame coming out the barrel.
The gun position was cleared.
The observation post reported that there was no bang in the target area.
Was the shell still in the barrel, what had happened? After a lot of panicking someone suggested the gun fitter (me) should go and look at the gun. I opened the breach thinking this is the last thing I am going to do EVER. :( Plop, the cartridge fell out with some burning embers. I looked up the barrel, no shell but more burning embers.
The Range Master Gunner and the Troop Sargent Major then counted the number of unused cartridge cases and shells. There was one more shell than cartridge cases. The crew had somehow managed to load the gun without a shell. :o :o

To start with I had been detailed with a few other chaps to block the near by public road. We stopped this car and could see what looked like a rifle butt poking over the back of the drivers seat. It was in the days when the IRA was very active, so the Bombardier in change of us dragged the driver out of his car. The weapon was removed, it was a shot gun. The chap had been poaching on army land, his boot was full of pheasants. It was at this point I was called for to look at the gun.

In the panic one of the junior officers had radioed to the main workshop asking for the Sargent gun fitter to come to the gun position. The Land Rover he was traveling in had a crash and he and my mate who was driving ended up in hospital.

The following morning I was ordered to see the workshop commander who wanted to know why I had asked for the Sargent gun fitter to help me. I was unaware that he had been called, thankfully the Troop Sargent Major backed me up.

As it was a very eventful night with only weeks to go before I left the army I clearly remember seeing flames like in the photo but only the once.
