Artillery and equipment tows.

Good afternoon,

I have scoured this forum for several months for its wealth of information, and have been so impressed I’ve finally decided to make an account.

I am a keen ww2 wargamer and I am always seeking to expand my knowledge, to aid in keeping my collections as accurate as possible.

My venture at the moment is to produce an Type 44 infantry regiment, having figures in both deployed and limbered states. For use in late war France, D-Day to Berlin.

Whilst I understand that towards the end of the war it was a case of what was available, and not necessarily uniform across the Wehrmacht. I am aiming to use the most common form of tow/limber used for that piece of equipment.

Thus far I have created a list, aided by information I have found on Wikipedia and other google searches. However, with so much conflicting information I just thought I’d maybe run the list past this forum to filter what’s correct or incorrect; before placing an order for models.

It looks a little like this.

Infantry Battalion Headquarters - Horsch 4x4 or Kubelwagon
Infantry Company’s - Horse drawn (4 wheel limber)
Heavy Weapons Company - Unsure ?(MG42, 81mm, 120mm - I believe the 120mm has it’s own trailer?)

Infantry Howitzer Company - Horse drawn (SiG 75mm & 150mm)
Anti Tank Company Pak 40 - Sdkfz 10
Anti Tank Company Panzerschrek Sections - Unsure?

Divisional Artillery LeFH18 105mm - Horse drawn?

Like I say, any clarification or pictures that could benefit me in the correct selection of vehicles, horse limbers etc would be greatly appreciated.

Kind regards

Jake

G'day

in 1944 I'd expect to see mounted/walking Bn command elements (the regimental HQ might have a few cars/kubelwagens and the Regimental Aufklarungs Zug would most likely be mounted on bicyccles (or possibly horses)), the Schwere Kp with horse drawn 12cm GrW (if they had any) or possibly RSO and theoretically Carts for the MG's and 8cm Grw (but most likely if8 type, carrying the equipment with the crews walking).

The regimental IG Battery probably horse drawn 7.5cm and RSO drawn 15cm. the PaK 40 likely a Maultier or a truck, the RkPzBchs also with if8 type carts and infantry walking...

If you're doing 20mm Valiant do a nice (although a little chunky in scale) if8 which includes a panzerschreck rack option and ACE do a nice MG cart (if5 I think?) . I also like the HaT German WWII wagons, though they can be challenging in the soft plastic they now use

Which rules are you using?

Regards

Aidan

Jake, in general terms you are mostly correct but to give yourself some variety in your choice of models you could go for things like the Maultier or Steyr RSO or the French Unic 107 to tow your Pak 40, all were used widely in the Infantry. There was a special adaption of the little IF8 infantry cart for carrying the Panzerschreck and most other smallish weapons and their ammunition could be carried on that too. On the wargames table though most of the things you list would already be being carried on foot wouldn't they ?
