Help with grandfather's photos. Any info, please!

The photo in the snow is not from the Caucasus region.

I agree that those photos do not show the Caucasus Mountains, their civilian attire seems to show that they are elsewhere. The farthest East we know that he went to was Taganrog, Russia in 1942 (based on his photos). That does not mean he would not have followed his Division wherever they went, and they were in the Caucasus Region fighting. Unless further information shows otherwise, we can follow his combat route based on the Division's history.

I cannot find any information if 1. Gebirgs was involved in the battle to take Novorossiysk? If they were not there, where were they after 21 August?

These four photos are the city of Mâcon, France above the river Saône, 67km North of Lyon. These pictures were taken when he was fighting with 54. Pioneer Battalion, shortly after the battles for the city and the bridge after June 19, 1940.

There is another photo on page 3 - #34 of this thread that I located from Pont-sur-Yonne, France which is 290km North of Mâcon. It shows them marching South towards Auxerre, France. It appears that his unit skirted Paris and went to fight French forces that were still operating in Central-Southern France. From 10 May - 19 June (40 days) the 54. Pioneer Battalion covered roughly 737km fighting on foot.

Are you able to read the digits on the front plate of this Sd.Kfz. 6 directly from your photo? If we get the registration number correct I can identify the history of the vehicle. It looks like Southern Russian/Caucasus in the Summer of 1942.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SdKfz_6

Here is at least one award your Grandfather was given: The Eastern Front Medal (Medaille „Winterschlacht im Osten 1941/42“)

I was incorrect, the ribbon on your grandfather's uniform is the War Merit Cross 2nd Class (Kriegsverdienstkreuz). However, I cannot tell if the ribbon in the photo is with swords or not; it should have been with swords - the version without swords is for civilians.

He would have also been awarded the Eastern Front Medal for his service in Ukraine/Russia/Caucasus from 1941/42, the Wehrmacht Long Service Medal 4th Class with Hoheitszeichen for 4 years of service and the Romanian Crusade Against Communism Medal with three battles clasps (Medalia Cruciada împotriva comunismului).

This photo may have been taken at the Jäger Kaserne mountain troops barracks, which is U.S. Army Sheridan Barracks today.

There is still a mystery as to why he is in Taganrog on 25 AUG 1942, his Division was involved in a lot of fighting during that time, so it seems strange for him to be so far away from the action and dressed in civilian clothes.

Three theories -

1. He could have been wounded, Taganrog had hospitals and recovery centers for officers and soldiers to rest.
2. During the summer campaign battles for the Caucasus in 1942, various infectious diseases occurred massively, so again he could be a hospital patient.
3. He could have been on leave, but I do not think his unit would have just let him go on R&R in the middle of such an intense campaign.
