Life dates of k.u.k. and Bundesheer officers

#1

Post by JakeV » 20 Oct 2018, 12:17

Hello,

As some of you may know, I particularly enjoy finding out life dates of officers (mainly Generals). Since there are generally few works on the officers of Austria-Hungary and the Bundesheer, I understand that there are many gaps in this particular subject.

Many names appear in "the official AHF Austria-Hungary quiz thread", but I believe it may not be convenient to interject every now and then to add the missing life dates. So, if anyone has any names that need searching, I can give it a try (at least I will be able to do so in the following few weeks). Note that the most useful of all parameters, if known, would be mentioning the place of birth of the person in question, so a search can go forward.

Regards

Dear Jake,

you know how much we need you important supplements. Please feel free to fill the gaps within the A-H quiz thread.

I have now 1.140 Generals (incl. Beamte etc.) on my screen and it would be an enormous work to find out their dates. Maybe we will publish our volume 1 of the general´s bios next year featuring the names from A to I. They were very interesting for me and my collegues….

We are going to present the volume with the "Volkswehrleutnante" next week in HGM Wien. Here you can have a look at the book:

Kindest regards and welcome!

Dear Jake,

wow, that was quick. Thank you very much for your more than valuable work. You will be given full credits in our book if you will give me your full Name via PM.

I will continue tomorrow with the "B" generals, if you allow me.

As for Altmann, I have not included him in the above because I have not directly confirmed that I have found the right guy:

Friedrich Joseph Ferdinand Altmann
* 09.04.1868 in Wien-Innere Stadt
† 09.09.1950 in Wien-Wieden

Eltern: Amtsdirektor des Bürgerspitals Michael Altmann († 1879) & Francisca, geb. Koller

31.08.1903 Heirat mit Olga, geb. Schwarzkopf (* 10.07./22.07.1882 in Odessa)

Here's why I think he is the right Altmann: From the 1920s, an officer named Friedrich Altmann lived in Wien-Wieden, Prinz-Eugen-Straße 14. In 1923 he was Oberst, by 1933 General i. R., 1942 General a. D., so a he fits with the 1924 promotion.

Then, in 1944, the Kleine Volks-Zeitung mentions that a General i. R. Viktor Altmann, living at the exact same address, was involved in an automobile accident. Since there is no such General by that name in the adress book of 1942, I suppose the journalist meant Friedrich. Since he was 76 years old in 1944, that means that he was born around 1868.

Finally, "my" Friedrich Altmann was born in 1868 and died in Wien-Wieden. So, unless some elaborate coincidence is in play, this one is at least a very good candidate. Of course, as already stated, direct confirmation is still needed. It might help that when he was married, he was "Hauptmann, eingetheilt im Eisenbahn-Bureau des Generalstabes".

It must be him:

01.09.1889 Leutnant (FJB 3)
01.11.1893 Oberleutnant (Jäg.R. 4, zuget. Gen.Stab 32. Inf.Brig.)
01.05.1897 Hauptmann i.G. (Eisenbahnbüro)
01.05.1897 RDA als Hauptmann im Truppendienst (IR 14)
01.05.1910 Major (IR 49)
01.11.1912 Oberstleutnant (IR 49)
01.09.1915 Oberst [58] (Kommandant LIR 35)
30.01.1924 Generalmajor d.R. (Titel)

He "disappears" from Generalstab in 1906 and changes to IR 14.

And, again, a special post for an ambiguous case which merits discussion: I am not sure that the man I found as Josef Bittner is the one you need.

Josef Bittner (ab __.07.1917 Edler von Bittner)
* 22.05.1856 in Brattersdorf bei Mährisch-Schönberg
† 15.12.1931 in Rodaun bei Wien (Atherosklerose)

He lived (and was buried as) Oberst d. R.; In the 1920s Adressbuch he shows up as follows:

Bittner Josef (aus Lehmann).png

Bittner Josef (aus Lehmann).png (41.09 KiB) Viewed 21373 times

I hope those help you to decide whether he's the man.

Our Josef von Bittner got his nobility on 22.02.1917 so I am not sure about. But there is no other Bittner in "Adelslexikon". Maybe he denied his promotion by the republic? I don´t know....
