RAD Badge Identification

#1

Post by Volyn » 04 Nov 2018, 16:40

Can someone confirm if the unit on the RAD badge that is on the sleeve above the swastika armband is 47 with 4 underneath? It should be a unit located near Berlin in 1938.

Maybe it is IV Pomeranian East 40-47?

It could be unit 42 not 47-

RAD Group 42 Bütow 01.10.1935, 1936, 1938, 1939
RAD-Abt. 1/42 Penzlin / Prignitz
RAD-Abt. 2/42 Bütow 1938, 1939
RAD-Abt. 3/42 Kaffzig
RADwJ bearings 3/42 Wusswerk
RAD-Abt. 4/42 Bütow 01.10.1935, 1936, Amern (W 10) Ofm. Wangler (as of 08.07.1938) "Yorck" (FDW)
RAD-Abt. 5/42 01.10.1935, 1936, 1938, 1939
RADwJ-Lager 5/42 Plaue / Havelgut
RAD-Abt. 6/42 Radensfelde
RADwJ-Bearing 10/42 Friesack
RADwJ-Bearing 16/42 Wadelsdorf

These are the 47 units -

RAD-Lager-Gruppe 47 Lübbenau
RADwJ-bearing 1/47 Gollmitz
RAD-Abt. K6 / 47 Lenzen
RAD-Abt. 8/47 Lenzen
RADwJ-Lager 10/47 Schlepzig

I rather see a 42/4.
From a different source on my PC:
RAD Bezirk IV - Mark Brandenburg (Berlin)
RAD Gruppe 42 - Berlin (1939):
Division / Location:
1/42 Penzlin b. Meyenburg
2/42 Elisabethhöhe bei Werder-Havel / Lindow Kurmark
3/42 Wusswerk / Königshorst-Nordhof
4/42 Hohennauen-Nordend
5/42 Plaue-Havelgut
6/42 Rhinow b. Großderschau
7/42 Nackel
8/42 Blumberg
9/42 Ringenwalde
10/42 Friesack
11/42 Liebenthal / Baitz b. Belzig
12/42 Falkenberg
13/42 Joachimsthal
14/42 Meyenburg
16/42 Wadelsdorf
23/42 Karstädt (Prignitz)"

Hohennauen is ~ 50 km west of Berlin:

I have a source that says 4/42 was RAD-Lager for women so we could be wrong; can you verify if this correct?

If so then we need to reexamine his sleeve number.

According to the law, women of the Third Reich also had to serve in RAD.

That is what I originally thought, so it would be 4/47 if it was a 4 underneath.

But that group is not listed in the link http://forum.balsi.de/index.php?topic=2060.0

RAD-Lager-Gruppe 47 Lübbenau

That´s why I mentioned in my first post that we need a better scan, Max.

I believe it could be so, see my post #3, but it still could be 4/42. The German 2 and 7 look similar but the 4 is distinct, and it really looks like there is a little 4 as the bottom number.

There is 4/42 for men according to the table could be found at Pommern near Bütow until 1938 (which is when the photograph was taken), but other sources say it could have also been for women. Maybe 4/42 is the correct unit and after 1938 it was re-designated a women's group?

As for RAD-Lager-Gruppe 47 Lübbenau it is also near Berlin, ironically 42 and 47 are almost equidistant from Berlin!

What do you gentlemen think - is it 4/42 Hohennauen- Nordend or mystery X/47?

Hohennauen is at least near Berlin, the claimed hometown of this man. I only wonder if his datas/information arte correct. We don´t have any documents of him which states wre he was born or did live. Only his own words on the immigration/naturalisation file. And who knows if they´re correct?

He is for sure born in Berlin (I do not know which district) and he joined RAD when he lived in Berlin in April 1938 (which is after he was sailing with the SS Deutschland in 1937). I think you are correct about 4/42 Hohennauen-Nordend, this is probably the correct RAD-Lager for him.

I just need to confirm if 4/42 was converted into a women's group later or if this was inaccurate information.
