Nice photo.

Anyone got information on his career from 1935-1945 apart from Axis Biography details

Thanks

There really isn't much more to add. There's no Dienstlaufbahn in his file, just an index of assignments and promotions which ends in 1940. And for his World War I service, there is only a Kriegsrangliste-Auszug from IR 128 which only has entries through June 1917, which was part of the documents for his promotion to active Leutnant in the regiment. Here is what I have from these sources:

1.4.11 Einj.Frw. im IR 128
31.3.12 unter Bef. z. Uffz. z. Res. entlassen
20.5.13 Vfw.d.R.
2.8.14 infolge Mobilmachung z. Ers./RIR 5 eingezogen
16.9.14 Offz.Stellv.
22.10.14 z. 8./IR 128 ins Feld
30.11.14 bei Konstantynow verwundet (G.G. re. Schulter)
20.1.15 z. Ers./IR 128
27.1.15 Lt.d.R. d. IR 128
29.3.15 z. IR 128 ins Feld
8.6.15 wegen Krankheit (Diphtherie) ins Lazarett
25.8.15 z. Ers./IR 128
27.9.15 z. IR 128 ins Feld
11.9.17 als Lt. mit Pat. v. 23.6.13 im IR 128 angestellt
xx.10.17 le. verw., b.d.Tr.
18.10.18 OLt.
16.5.20 im RwIR 102
27.9.20 mit 1.10.20 i.d. 4.IR versetzt
1.7.22 RDA v. 20.6.18(8) erhalten
1.1.27 z. Hptm. befördert mit RDA v. 1.1.27(3)
20.3.33 mit d. 1.4.33 i.d. Stab d. Inf.-Fhr. III versetzt, kdrt. z. Rw.Min., Vers.Kdo. (In 2)
21.11.33 trägt v. 1.12.33 ab d. Unif. d. Rw.Min.
1.9.34 z. Major befördert (20)
15.10.35 im Kr.Min. (In 2) (laut Stellenbesetzung)
16.3.37 m.W.v. 1.3.37 z. Oberstleutnant befördert (44)
12.10.37 Kdr. III./IR 12 (laut Stellenbesetzung)
6.11.39 m.W.v. 28.10.39 z. Kdr. IR 131 ernannt
1.3.40 z. Oberst befördert (10)
9.7.40 m.W.v. 2.7.40 Fhr.Res. OKH, seinem Dienst regelt d. Bfh. i. WKr. XI
28.8.40 m.W.v. 9.8.40 z. Kdr. d. Lehrabt. II d. Inf.Schule ernannt. Er wird m.W.v. 2.8.40 z. seiner neuen Dienstst. kdrt.

Verlustliste Nr. 81 says he was missing in action on 23.1.43, so he must have been captured before the final fall of Stalingrad.

He had the Verwundetenabzeichen in mattweiß, so he must have been wounded at least one more time in World War I. He received the EK2 on 3.7.18 and the EK1 on 12.6.17. The Kgl. Hausorden v. Hohenzollern, Ritterkreuz mit Schwertern, was gazetted on 20.8.18, but the actual award date is not in the file. From Reichswehr ranklists, we also know he had the Hamburg Hanseatenkreuz. As can be seen in the photo, he added the 1939 Spangen to the EK1&2. With his one-year volunteer year, his Übung A in 1913, and continuous service from 2.8.14, he should have reached 25 years' service in July 1938, so he should have also had the Wehrmacht-DA 4. bis 1.Kl., as well as the Ehrenkreuz für Frontkämpfer.

Dave

Militär-Kraftfahrschein 3.Klasse.

I assume the different classes refer to the types of vehicles one could operate, but I have no idea which is which.

I don' t know the correct answer. My information (it is Elchlepp) is congruent with the same pic in Paul Carell "Der Russlandkrieg - Fotografiert von Soldaten",

OK Dieter, thanks again. Taking a look at my archives I found out a small version of the pic you posted and I have this man identified as Elchlepp too, so I guess it must be a mistake of that site.

Some pics are still left, hope somebody else can post any of those missing.

Best,

I'm the webmaster of the site, which is currently off line for the moment (startpage). It is definitely Günther Breithaupt at http://www.stalingrad.net/german-hq/div ... ficers.htm

1) confirmed by his family
2) confirmed by August Ullrichs' son (Augsut Ullrich standing in the centre of the picture)
3) if you compare the Breithaupt picture on the page with the other picture on the page were Paulus is on you see clearly it is Breithaupt.
4) I have a picture of Hans Elchlepp and you can be sure that he looks different as Breithaupt...

During my research on the Stalingrad officers IN the encirclement I once visited Dorothy Elchlepp (English nationality) at her appartement in Freiburg. She was married with the brother of Hans Elchlepp. Her son Dieter Elchlepp was once member of the European parlement.

Thanks
In my research to the General Officers who were trapped IN the Stalingrad encirclement (visiting families of these officers and archives) I found out about Magnus :

About Stalingrad :

Early January 1943 Erich Magnus became sick. Due to the bad weather conditions he got a heavy cold and later the flu. Erich Magnus was not able anymore to command his division and was replaced by Generalmaor Martin Lattmann who was by then commander of the 14. Panzer Division since 1 January 1943. On 13 January 1943 he took command of the 389. Infanterie Division. Martin Lattmann was replaced by former commander of Artillerie Regiment 4 Oberst Günther Ludwig, who took command of the remnants of the 14.Panzer Division the same day. Some sources are telling us that Erich Magnus faked his sickniss. By doing so it is said that he tried to become a permition to fly out of the Stalingrad pocket. However we have no official confirmation about this.

The storie goes also that Erich Magnus had a nervous breakdown early January 1943. He should have been not fitted enough to command a division in hard circumstances like in Stalingrad. However also of this fact we do not have any official documents to prove this. When the Russian splitted up the German Stalingrad pocket in two, and later in three parts by 28 Janaury 1943, the 389. Infanterie Division ended up in the Northern pocket with the XI. Army Corps of Karl Strecker. The division staff, among them Generalmjor Erich Magnus and Generalmajor Martin Lattmann, and the rest of the soldiers surrendered in the morning of 2 February 1943.

About his life :

After being captured Erich Magnus and the other Generals captured at Stalingrad were sent by train to Moscow. Arriving there he had a pneumonia and was transeffered to a prisoners hospital in Moscow were he recovered. He spent his captivity in several POW camps in Russia.

One of them was the Woikovo POW camp where the most of the captured German generals stayed at least a while. He was forced to join the BDO and the NKFD but he refused to join. He was completely against these organisations.
Later he was sentence 25 years of hard labour but was finally released and arrived in West-Berlin on 6 October 1955 after 12 and a half years held as a prisoner by the Russians.

After returning back in Germany he moved from Berlin to Hamburg. During his captivity his wife Margarete Gollmitz, died. Erich Magnus had married her on 14 May 1922. They had one child, a daughter who was born on 11 December 1925. After returning home he met Erika Maessig, a widow with three children. After living together for a while both married during 1957. Erich Magnus was a music lover. He often visited the Hamburg city opera or Hamburger Staatsopera. During 1978 he had a stroke. His wife was not able anymore to take care for him at their house and Erich Magnus went to a nursing home in Hamburg where he died on 6 August 1979. Erich Magnus was buried on the Bergedorf cementary in Hamburg.

Field work is the best research. Documents are just documents. A good base to start researching but never trust what is written on this kind of documents.

Oberst Hans-Günther van Hooven in September 1943. Strange that he looks younger (and different!) than the previous picture...

Who were the three musketeers?
Cheers
Freiherr
Menzel, not Wenzel.

Menzel = Ia 16. Pz. Div.
