DP28 machinegun with hopper magazine
DP28 machinegun with hopper magazine
I thought I would share this article in case there was some interest in Russian experiments with machineguns (probably some people already read it): https://www.forgottenweapons.com/light- ... -fed-dp28/
I am not aware of any other nations, apart from Japan and Russia, experimenting with hopper magazines for machineguns during this period, but if someone knows another example it would be interesting to hear.

This looks like the Russians copied the Type 11 6.5mm Japanese Nambu that uses the same idea. Or, did the Japanese copy the Russians?
The feed looks identical:
I suspect the Russians copied it, then found it to be impractical and ditched it for the "record player" magazine.

If you read the article, you can see it says the Russians got the idea from Japanese Type 11.T. A. Gardner wrote: ↑19 Dec 2018, 20:17This looks like the Russians copied the Type 11 6.5mm Japanese Nambu that uses the same idea. Or, did the Japanese copy the Russians?

Yes, I read the article afterwards. Obviously, the Russians figured out the shortcomings of such a system and dropped it after a brief experimentation with it.koczownik wrote: ↑19 Dec 2018, 21:21If you read the article, you can see it says the Russians got the idea from Japanese Type 11.T. ^ Yes Hisname, that seems consistent with the info I have read. Can I ask what book that photo is from?
Re: DP28 machinegun with hopper magazine
This is a directory of the collection of the Museum of St. Petersburg.
This book has been released in extremely small print runs for historians of military affairs and weapons.
Here is the link, but I'm not sure that your pictures will be displayed.

Thank you for posting that link, Hisname. That's a handy resource.
Re: DP28 machinegun with hopper magazine
Many thanks, I was looking for such information, I wonder if Forgotten Weapons (aka Ian) knows about these. Do you perhaps have more technical data or anything regarding ballistics (laboratory, field conditions, I am also looking for shot groups, there is almost no information on this), specifically about SMGs (so far I used post war Czech and Chinese manuals)? I also know that the Soviets have experimented with their own GPMGs, are there any articles in English on this? This is a directory of the collection of the Museum of St. Petersburg.

Also, I would argue that Japanese and Soviet machineguns were very inspired by Madsen designs and later learned from each other in the Russo-Japanese conflicts. The Russian Imperial Army was a known customer and interested in various developments.
Re: DP28 machinegun with hopper magazine
I am not sure about Russian machineguns, but I know that Japan took inspirations from Hotchkiss designs, for example on Japanese Type 3 and Type 92 MGs.
