The post-war escape of Ante Pavelic?

#1

Post by Sid Guttridge » 26 Jan 2019, 12:45

Hi Guys,

Has the route taken by Pavelic in his post-war escape to Argentina been definitively established?

As I understand it, until the spring of 1946 he found shelter with sympathisers in Austria. He then passed into Italy where he was sheltered on Vatican property until he was able to sail for South America two years later.

Is this basically true?

Did the Pope himself know of this, or was it just that lower members of the Vatican hierarchy were implicated? Or was it just Catholics, rather than members of the Vatican, who were involved?

Many thanks for any assistance,

Sid.

This is Wikipedia but the part about his escape to Argentina seems to be correct.

Hi #2,

Thanks.

I read that, but the relevant part is qualified by several "citation needed"s.

That is why I was trying to get something more concrete.

Cheers,

Sid

Try the Holocaust Museum in Washington. It may have a reference section whereby researchers can e-mail and ask questions. The museum has the world's largest collection of documents on this subject. The postwar OSS/CIA/British Intelligence papers on Pavelic sum to many tens of thousands of pages and the museum has copies of most of them. Surely there is a final report in there somewhere that details his escape to Argentina.

Another wiki link and a few more names worth researching: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Catholi ... the_Ustaše

No doubt it was not only the lower ranks of the church who knew of his whereabouts.
In a resent WW2 programme on the history channel the Pontifical Croatian College of St. Jerome was also mentioned as one of his “hide-outs”.
