Re: Help Id these heavy coastal guns
Article refers to newly revealed CIA reports related to Poland.
Most of the reports are interesting but not all of them are credible.
I don't know why it was ilustraded with abonded by Germans guns and barrels.
Correct location of this site is: Świnoujście - not Wollin island which is nearby.

Re: Help Id these heavy coastal guns
Hi all,
I found these small images on Ebay. I think the gun is a US-manufactured 234mm Bethelem gun captured to the Russians.
According to Ebay photo caption the gun is manned by Marine Artillerie Abt. 630.
Does somebody have any information about this unit ?

MAA 630 helped protect army group north’s northern flank as it advanced through the Baltic states towards Leningrad.

Apparently this was part of a three gun battery at Halbinsel Surupi (Surupi peninsula). According to the unit report 2 guns were blown up before the Germans could capture them but one was seemingly captured more or less intact but with an explosive charge in the barrel (My assumption is that this is the gun in the photos). An undamaged reserve barrel was also found. A fourth gun was being transported without its cradle (my translation could be a little off here).
There is another photo lot showing the same unit using 15.2cm Russian guns at Halbinsel Naissaar (according to the notes on the back of the photographs) but the MAA 630 report says the two gun battery of the same caliber had been destroyed by the time the unit got there. The unit further records that some intact barrels of the same caliber had been recovered later on so perhaps at least one of the guns at Naissaar was repaired and put back in service?
Naissaar is an island in Tallinn bay in Estonia. Surupi is also in Estonia. The unit report refers to Naissaar as being a peninsula. I’m not sure if in the intervening 80 years or so it’s become an island?
All very interesting.

Prior to the war 1939 the estonians listed a 234 mm cd battery as "Rannapatarei(Battery) nr. 6: (234mm)" in their order of battle. It was listed as part of the Suurop Peninsula Command.

Re: Help Id these heavy coastal guns
It shows to be on the west side of Tallin Bay and a map I have seen shows the 234 battery to have been there.

Not sure Sturm. Maybe. All I know is that the unit reports said they were 15.2cm guns.
