Re: Some SS "Handschar" photo-infos
Has anyone noticed the Spanish volunteer (“Blue Division”) next to the “Handschar” one?balkanguy44 wrote: ↑04 Nov 2018, 12:12Guys!!
A member of the Handschar with Cossacks! How can this be? Is this a real photo? I’ve found it on Facebook.. can’t remember the page.

Do you mean this photo? I'm not sure that this is a Spanish volunteer. The quality of the photo is too low to clearly speak about the belonging of a soldier. The place where this photo was taken is also unknown.

Yes that’s the photo I mean. The overall quality of the photo is ok, but you are right it’s not so good.

Re: SS-Division "Handschar" photos
It's not a Spanish volunteer arm shield. It's most likely an Eastern volunteer shield, possibly one of the Don (Cossack) ones. What is visible is dark colour in the lower part of the shield and (as far as I see) two lighter colours in the middle and upper parts, with an inscription (country/region name), on a dark background, at the top (it might be the Don Cossack shield with dark red, light blue and yellow colours). If it was a Spanish shield, there would be dark-light-dark colour combination with an inscription at the top. Again, not sure that it's a Don Cossack shield, since the Eastern volunteers had many similar arm shields.

It's most likely this sculpture (photographed from a different angle obviously): Complete image: https://www.alamy.com/stock-photo-art-o ... 13240.htmlIvan Ž. wrote: ↑05 Mar 2019, 22:56...but I don't think that's a naughty lady photo on the wall, although that's also the first thing that came to my mind as something typical of young men and soldiers. It's an entire newspaper page (notice the headline and long text on the side) with a photo of something that looks more like a sculpture. A "naughty woman" doesn't fit too well with the religious-propaganda story that the photographer was making at the time. So it's likely something asexual and more sport/art-oriented.

"Selo u Birču popaljeno od zloglasne 13. SS divizije, 1944." - A village burned down by the 13th SS "Handschar" Division. According to the description it was taken in the Herzegovina region in May 1944. It is false information I guess, or not?

It is difficult to say which this particular village is. However, there are established facts that the division (and especially its Albanian unit) committed a number of brutal war crimes in the spring and summer of 1944

Re: SS-Division "Handschar" photos
Hello,
According to Partisan documents, the 13th SS Division indeed committed a number of war crimes in the Birač area in early May 1944.
From a III Corps HQ dispatch dated 3 May 1944: "The 13th SS Division is horribly terrorising both Serbian and Muslim villages. In Majevica, Semberija, Posavina, Birač, hundreds of elderly, women and children were killed and slaughtered. They torch and pillage everything they find."
A dispatch dated 8 May 1944: "In Birač, they razed to the ground: the villages of Petrovići, Vlačići, Mrkajići, Savići, Zekić, Tepen, Gajevi, Vrelo, Gačići, Supčane, Pobedarje, Dole, Jasen, Šupljaka, Žeravice."
See: "Zbornik dokumenata i podataka o NOR-u" vol. IV, bk 25, pp. 639, 642 (and 643).
See also: ibid., bk 27, pp. 215-216 (including f.n. 9).
Cheers,
Ivan
