I heard somwhere they called handschar "Blue Division" they had mistaken it with some croat. Divisons
Indeed, they called it "SS plava divizija" (SS Blue Division). This nickname appears in March-August 1944 documents. Apparently, according to the "Zbornici" staff, the Partisans didn't mistake it for another division, but they called it "Blue" because of the blue tassels on fezzes. This doesn't make much sense - not only since the tassels were black - even if they were pink, the chances are extremely low that anyone would nickname a unit by such a minor detail on uniform. So the reason for such a nickname remains unknown.

Cheers and over to Huska,
Ivan

It’s not difficult but you gotta know it.

What was the usual German term for a Bosnian Muslim who served in the 13th SS “Handschar” Division?

Hi BG 44

Surprisingly, maybe I really do not know something. Please tell me who is this "Imam Bubalo" and what he did in the division of the field gendarmerie of the SS division "Handschar" entirely composed of German personnel?

Hello, DFrolov1992

The source is the book of Mr Sulejmanpasic. However, as we know his book contains of some wrong information.

According to different sources Catholic Croats were transferred to the field gendarmerie of the “Handschar” Division, or not?

It is clearly stated in the source that the info marked "(?)" is unknown or unconfirmed! And the author shouldn't have published it in the first place! Please, everyone, refrain yourselves from posting such (mis)information on the forum. Unconfirmed info shouldn't be spread around.

Hi

Based on the photographs available, the field gendarmerie unit consisted entirely of German personnel and, of course, there was no imam in it and could not be. The translation of Catholics was excluded because, firstly, the division commander himself (Sauberzweig) considered catholic croats as an insufficiently valuable resource and treated them with contempt, and secondly, the policy of the division and the leaders of the SS responsible for this project was reduced to maximum limiting Catholic influence.

Best regards

Regarding the nickname "Mujo" (also: "Muja", depending on the region): it's not German but a Balkan nickname for Muslims, which the Germans accepted. A funny detail is that the world's oldest known alligator, which arrived at the Belgrade Zoo in the 1930s and still lives there, is called - Muja! :D (Belgraders certainly chose an interesting name for their alligator...)

Ivan

I guess it's my turn now: What was the German nickname of the battalions I./28 and III./51 that were commanded by Hstuf. Walter Bormann?
