Tank Corps shtat 010/418 and Tank Brigades

Given the success we have had with Pamyat Naroda and other sources in establishing I thought that we should make a start in the better known Tank Corps. Even though the documentation is better on Tank Corps there are still gaps in the shtat numbers, personnel, weapons and vehicles and equipment for those shtats.

This thread should cover the Second Generation Tank Corps: 010/418
and the associated Tank Brigades:
010/345-352
010/240
010/270-277
010/500

and associated Tank Regiments:
010/292
010/414 (a least 3 variants)
010/463
010/464
010/465
010/507

Motor Rifle Brigades will remain over that the Mech Corps site as far as possible:
Mech Corps shtat 010/418 viewtopic.php?f=79&t=196789
Mechanised Brigade shtat 10/420-432 March 1943 viewtopic.php?f=79&t=196779
Mechanised Brigade shtat 10/370-380 September 1942 viewtopic.php?f=79&t=196669

It would help searching this thread is people could put the shtat number in the title of each post

010/270 Tank Brigade

Development of Armoured and Mechanised Forces ABTV f38 op11373 d158
page 16:
1. Staff No. 010/280 - 010/287 - of the Tank Brigade was approved on July 14, 1942, numbering 922 people and 40 T-34 tanks - 24, T-60 tanks - 16 /.

2. The most advanced organization of the tank brigade in the state was No. 010/270 - 010/277, approved on July 31, 1942. The formation of brigades mainly occurred in this state.

DIAGRAM OF ORGANIZATION
TANK BRIGADE WITH 53 TANKS STATE No. 010/270 - 010/277
010-270 Tank Brigade.jpg
In September 1942, another state of the Tank Brigade No. 010/240 - 010/248 was developed, numbering 1,076 people and 49 tanks / "KV" - 5, "T-34" - 24, "T-70" - 20 / A small number of brigades were formed in this state, because in October, separate Guards brigades began to form. Tank regiments of the KV, Churchill Breakthrough /

The development and approval of new states did not mean the abolition of the old ones or the transfer of existing organisms to them. In the newly approved states, new formations were produced, previously formed organisms remained in the old states and were transferred during reorganization.

Therefore, by the end of 1942, tank brigades were kept in seven states / 010/317, 010/318, 010/345, 010/343, 010/240, 010/280 and 010/270 /.

The largest number of brigades was maintained by state No. 010/270; other brigades were gradually transferred to this main state, if possible.

In 1942, a new organizational tank unit appeared - a tank regiment.

In September 1942, staff No. 010/292, a tank regiment of a mechanized brigade, was developed.

At that time there were no mechanized brigades, and motorized rifle brigades were formed across the state 010/370 - 010/380, approved in March 1942, as rifle formations reinforced with artillery, anti-aircraft and anti-tank means and mortars transported by vehicles had high maneuverability. Motorized rifle brigades, as separate ones, acted in exceptional cases, and most often belonged organizationally to the tank corps.

The mechanized brigade consisted of a motorized rifle brigade and a tank regiment; its creation was caused by the organization of new mechanized corps, which began to form in September 1942.

In the first picture "010/270-010/270" should be substituted with "010/270-010/277". According to tankfront an AT rifle company (010/375) was added in January 1943, an anti-aircraft machine gun company (010/451) in March 1943.

There are material differences between the two schemes in their detail, some differences in totals as we have seen before.

I greeting the entire esteemed community! This post will be about separate Tank Brigade of Shtat No.010/345, 010/347-352, 010/391, 010/392 from May 29, 1942 (on November 25, 1942).
I want to post completed old find, I started working on it long time ago - but at certain stage, I decided that it was not relevant and abandoned it, and still original Shtat began to come across...
Organization Chart of sep. Tank Brigade Shtat №010-345 as of November 25, 1942.jpg
The original image is here: https://pamyat-naroda.ru/documents/view/?id=258808963 The notable in this document is that not shown the tanks of Bde cmd, which were in composition of HQ Co. According to data of this chart, the quantity of these tanks should be consist four - one T-34 and three T-60/T-70. The site tankfront.ru - our General assistant and friend, says in this section http://tankfront.ru/ussr/staff.html if you compare the data from table "Battalions", the same. I decided to accompany this Organization Chart by following document, if ti has already been translated and uploaded, then I apologize for the possible repetition:
Order of NKO SSSR No.00106 from May 29, 1942 - Orig..jpg
Translation, only because of one point "2":
Order of NKO SSSR No.00106 from May 29, 1942.jpg
The cited document is taken from the collection of orders of the People's Commissar of Defense of the USSR 22 June 1941-1942: "Русский архив: Великая Отечественная Т.13 (2—2). Приказы народного комиссара обороны СССР. 22 июня 1941г.-1942 г." - М.: ТЕРРА, 1997.
Digital edition in formats DJVU+OCR and DOC+ is here (freely available): http://militera.lib.ru/docs/da/nko_1941-1942/index.html And of course, this source is available here: http://tankfront.ru/ussr/doc/nko/pr42/00/00106.html

I am glad to greeting all esteemed community! Especially I am glad to greeting You, Dear Gary Kennedy, and You, Dear Leo Niehorster! I apologize to everyone for such a long period of silence, as well as those who waited for the promised continuation on the topic TO&E of Soviet Engineering Troops 1941-1945 - excuse me, but for now I have postponed work on this topic.
The work on the material that I present today was initiated by You, Dear Gary, or rather by this yours post: viewtopic.php?p=2222115#p2222115, and even more specifically - by PDF document placed in post. I was interested in the date in file name. You, Dear Leo, in this yours post: viewtopic.php?p=2197626#p2197626 You mentioned about datings of Shtat. Summary in your post Dear Gary in its title has a time reference to February edition of Shtat, but the revision in it is clearly June! You can make sure of this here: http://tankfront.ru/ussr/staff.html and this right here: http://tankfront.ru/ussr/organisation/s ... 5_tbr.html Further, the information on tankfront.ru directed me to search for documents on pamyat-naroda.ru. After analyzing the results of my searches, I decided to make a review material similar to what I have already done here, in this topic: viewtopic.php?f=79&t=242730 Accordingly, the object of consideration will be a separate Tank Brigade of Shtat No.010/345-010/352,including options for organizing its tank battalions - Shtat No.010/391-396 and separate tank company of small tanks Shtat No.010/397. Tank Brigades from Tank Corps(TC Shtat No.010/369) of the same Shtat No.010/345-010/352, 010/393-396, 010/397 will be considered as comparisons.
I would like to present a set materials of factology that interested me, which will help in the future to make the most objective analysis of the life cycle this Shtat. In contrast to the above mentioned topic about Separate Tank Battalions,
today and here according to the results of 'my digging in the details' there will be no obvious 'The Main Hero'. Already after collecting the initial information for this material, I found that some Tank Brigades, whose data that came into my attention are not mentioned in famous work of Charles C. Sharp "School of Battle. Soviet Tank Corps and Tank Brigades January 1942 to 1945". There will also be an additions for data from this section of the site: http://tankfront.ru/ussr/tbr.html I will indicate on these all in each individual case.
I want to start with following document:
Order of NKO USSR No.0295 from April 19, 1942.jpg
taken from here: http://tankfront.ru/ussr/doc/nko/pr42/0/0295.html General list of orders NKO available at: http://tankfront.ru/ussr/doc/nko.html In 1st point of this order, Comrade Stalin names Shtat No.010/345-010/352 standard(in russian - 'типовой'/tipovoj) shtat. Important point, do not confuse this word with its paronym - typical(in russian - 'типичный'/tipichnyj or 'типический'/tipicheskij). In Russian language(as in era of Stalin, so in our days) the meaning of word 'типовой' characterizes such processes as standardization, line production and governmental normative regulation(https://ru.wikipedia.org/wiki/Типовое_проектирование). I connecting the last process with the following interesting moment - in spring of 1942 freedom of creativity in relation to shtats was available not only to the Main Directorate of Formations and Staffing of People's Commissariat of Defense USSR, but also to lower-level structures such as the command of the Fronts and Armies(their temporary editions of shtats - individual Alps that someone will have to conquer!). In my subjective opinion, in this simple word combination - standard shtat('типовой штат') of Comrade Stalin reflects the same simple intention of soviet military leadership on introduction the Shtat No.010/345-010/352 as 'etalon', taking into account already the started return to the corps organisation. At that, subsequent in the sequel additions and corrections do not cancel this conclusion of mine. I will return to this in my final totals.
For completeness and integrity of historical assessment, I will present three documents, showing the execution of Order NKO No.0295. I'm sorry, but I decided not to translate these in full, only the fragments. The first is governing document:
Order No.0431 of Cmdr 5 Army of May 1, 1942 ''Transfer of 20th sep.TBde on Shtat No.010-345 - 352''.jpg
here is the link: https://pamyat-naroda.ru/documents/view/?id=451353832 I will to mark translated excerpts of text in blue color, in red - all those parts of text, content of which I will to use. The start of text, "In execution of order NKO No.0295 from 19.4.42: 1. 20th Tank brigade towards 4.5.42 to transfer on shtats of Tank brigades per numbers 010/345-010/352 strength of 1107 men." The other two are operational documents, namely Armor-summaries of Auto-armoured Directorate of West Front. The second:
Armor-summary No.113 of ABTU West Front on May 08, 1942 1st page.jpg
Armor-summary No.113 of ABTU West Front on May 08, 1942 2nd page.jpg
Here on 1st page says about 20th Tank Bde, "The brigade was gone over on new shtats No.010/345-010/352." The third document, following the second one in time, will be compilation of fragments of all three pages:
Armor-summary No.116 of ABTU West Front on May 11, 1942.jpg
Link to full original: https://pamyat-naroda.ru/documents/view/?id=259864131 Here in paragraph FIRST('ПЕРВОЕ'), "The all tank brigades were gone over on new shtats No.010/345-010/352." In operational documents of that level, there must be mention about the order of NKO, which relating to organisational changes of auto-armoured forces. Below on the text, I will give examples of this kind. Most likely this mention could be in missing two reports under numbers 103 and 109. The first should be between No.102 from April 19: https://pamyat-naroda.ru/documents/view/?id=259864094 and No.104 from April 24: https://pamyat-naroda.ru/documents/view/?id=259864097, the second absent between No.108 from April 29: https://pamyat-naroda.ru/documents/view/?id=259864110 and No.110 from May 2: https://pamyat-naroda.ru/documents/view/?id=259864113. So, the two armor-summaries that interest us are either lost, or they did not exist at all.
Regarding supplementary information - on tankfront.ru, on page of each unit have section III.Numerical and combat composition(in russian - 'Численный и боевой состав'), in which the numbers of Shtat indicates with its changes and terms of formations and reformations. Based on foregoing material about Shtat No.010/345-010/352, additions apply to data of:
17th TankBde (future 9th grd.TankBde of 1st Grd.MC) - http://tankfront.ru/ussr/tbr/tbr017.html
32nd TankBde - http://tankfront.ru/ussr/tbr/tbr032.html
145th TankBde (future 43rd grd.sep.TankBde / 43rd grd.HvyTankBde) - http://tankfront.ru/ussr/tbr/tbr145.html
6th grd.TankBde 'a' (it is the same from February 22, 1943 23rd grd.sep.TankBde) - http://tankfront.ru/ussr/tbr/gvtbr23.html
corrections can be made to the data of:
18th TankBde (future 42nd grd.sep.TankBde / 42nd grd.HvyTankBde) - http://tankfront.ru/ussr/tbr/tbr018.html
20th TankBde - http://tankfront.ru/ussr/tbr/tbr020.html
2nd grd.TankBde - http://tankfront.ru/ussr/tbr/gvtbr02.html

To be continued ...

Post by Nakhodchanin » 12 Aug 2020, 07:45

...let's continue:

A small clarification - in above Armor-summaries have mention yet about 11th, 108th and 94th Tank Bde. The first two were contained on Shtat No.010/345-010/352 still before considered reorganisation event. On the last, 94th it didn't affect - brigade was continuing to live on Shtat No.010/343, on which it was formed. Its time will come in a month. A composite document from pages's fragments from two sources:
Fragments from documents of 11th and 94th Tank Brigades on April-May 1942.jpg
The first source is "Combat characteristic of 94th Tank Brigade on May 9, 1942" on 2 pages, here link: https://pamyat-naroda.ru/documents/view/?id=113721607 and second - "Report on combat actions of 11th Tank Brigade from April 5 to April 23, 1942" on 5 pages, link: https://pamyat-naroda.ru/documents/view/?id=454988387 As for 108th brigade, unfortunately I did not find such documents. There are facts of an indirect nature and comparisons by analogy. I decided not to give them, because it will not be possible to do it briefly and capaciously. I considered the information from here sufficient for the time being: http://tankfront.ru/ussr/tbr/tbr108.html
On site http://tankfront.ru Tank Brigades of Shtat No.010/345-010/352, of the initial version, that is with tank battalions of Shtat No.010/346 are called Tank Brigades of mixed organisation(in russian - 'смешанный'/smeshannyj) or simply and briefly - mixed Tank Brigades here: http://tankfront.ru/ussr/organisation/org_tk.html The use of quotation marks in Russian and English is somewhat different. According to the rules of punctuation of the Russian language (as far as I know them), in this case the word 'смешанный' is in quotation marks as it has a special meaning that is not characteristic of its usual use. I was interested in the common (for both languages) purpose of using quotation marks - quoting, that is to say, did such a characteristic of Shtat take place in the period under study. Out of a fairly large massif of archival documents with which I dealt, there were only two in which this word combination encountered. But only one of them, of a reporting nature, has a direct bearing on Shtat No.010/345- 010/352. The second document contains that definition and therefore this is a kind of sign of transition, since a month later, in November 1943, finally implemented homogeneity of Shtat of Tank Brigade will appear. At first, of course, I will present another composite file:
Mixed organisation of TankBde.jpg
At the top is mandatory introduction from the above-mentioned material of the site tankfront.ru, below are fragments of these documents. The first from above is fragment of 2nd page of "Report on combat actions of 24th Tank Brigade for the month of August 1942" on 12 pages with schemes, available at: https://pamyat-naroda.ru/documents/view/?id=451262982 Here's the translation, "Brigade of mixed type reformed in the brigade of KV tanks according to shtat No. 010/393 by August 1, 1942, as part of 5 TC". The lowest fragment is an excerpt from 1st page of "Order of Commander of Armored and Mechanized Forces of Red Army No.1105098c from September 9, 1943" on 2 pages, here link: https://pamyat-naroda.ru/documents/view/?id=454993705 Below I will give an example of how in the reporting documents, the entire row's numbers of Shtat of Tank Brigade KV replaced, as here by a single number of Shtat of Tank Battalion.
Since I mentioned such variant of Shtat No.010/345-010/352, as Tank Brigade KV 010/345, 010/347-010/352, 010/393, I will pay a little attention to it, or rather its name. The formation of first eight Mechanized Corps in summer 1940 led to the disappearance of four Heavy Tank Brigades in Auto-Armoured Troops of Red Army. That Order of Comrade Stalin: download/file.php?id=446679&t=1 revived armoured formations of heavy tanks on the basis and within the frameworks of Shtat No.010/345-010/352, moreover not in a separate status, but as a integral element of Tank Corps. Thus, the disappeared letter abbreviation 'ТТБр'(in russian - 'Тяжелая Танковая Бригада') returned again, although it was used episodically. Another "cutting":
'ТТБР' - HvyTBde.jpg
So in order, from top to bottom: First fragment from "Report on numerical and combat composition of 107th Tank Brigade on condition of June 28, 1942" on 2 pages, taken from "Excerpt from journal of combat actions of 107th Tank Brigade from March 20 to August 6, 1942" on 24 pages with schemes, https://pamyat-naroda.ru/documents/view/?id=130579545 there available at 17th-18th pages. The next two fragments from orders, first from "Combat order No.012 Staff of 3rd Grd.HvyTankBde July 24, 1942", link: https://pamyat-naroda.ru/documents/view/?id=454989551; second - "Combat order No.05 Staff of 7 Tank Corps July 8, 1942" on 2 pages, here link: https://pamyat-naroda.ru/documents/view/?id=454989557 The fourth fragment from 5th page of "Report on combat actions of 97th Tank Brigade per the period from August 22 to 28, 1942" on 6 pages with suggested Organization Chart, available at: https://pamyat-naroda.ru/documents/view/?id=454978955 The next fragment from reporting document: "Information about losses inflicted on the enemy by 13th TC and 133rd HvyTBde from August 17 to 24, 1942", link: https://pamyat-naroda.ru/documents/view/?id=131308216 Finally, the remaining two fragments from the documents of 148th TankBde: penultimate from 1st page of "Report on combat actions of 148th HvyTBde per the period from July 18 to 28, 1942" on 5 pages, here: https://pamyat-naroda.ru/documents/view/?id=114394921 And last from "Report of 148th HvyTBde August 26, 1942" on 2 pages, available at: https://pamyat-naroda.ru/documents/view/?id=114394930 Such a moment is worthy of attention - two out of four tank brigades, of which documents I found the abbreviation, it were formed on the basis of units of pre-war formation. This is 3rd Grd.(Ex-8th)TankBde formed based 63rd TankRgt of 32nd TankDiv: http://tankfront.ru/ussr/tbr/tbr008.html#2ref and also 133rd TankBde (which will become 11th Grd.HvyTankBde of follow generation - on tanks IS) based 19th TankRgt of 10th TankDiv: http://tankfront.ru/ussr/tbr/tbr133.html#2ref One of the other two - 148th was formed on the basis of 109th TankDiv already of war-time: http://tankfront.ru/ussr/tbr/tbr148.html and http://tankfront.ru/ussr/td.html in turn for last were used personnel of pre-war far eastern 59th TankDiv. I designated the belonging of the each Tank Brigade KV to tank corps, in which the brigade as part on moment of formation or a little later, for example when transferring from one structure to another. Among the documents, fragments of which were used there are two, for which my designation is not entirely correct. This is document, related to 133rd TankBde, and also report of 148th TankBde on August 26, 1942. These materials date from the period, when specified brigades were leaving (or already logged out) structure of their corps. Of all the tank brigades that came into view, which had heavy organisation: 3rd guards, 24th, 97th, 107th, 133rd and 148th, Charles C. Sharp in his book "School of Battle. Soviet Tank Corps and Tank Brigades January 1942 to 1945" calls only the 133rd, "Heavy Tank Brigade", on 71st page. 107th TankBde mentioned twice in this book, as equipped only of tanks KV and T-60, on 30th and 68th pages, that due to the documents I have cited, it can be noted as an indirect indication on heavy organisation. There are spots on the Sun too - to find out what, 148th TankBde was as part 2nd TC on summer 1942 as Tank Brigade KV, on page of itself the brigade on site tankfront.ru impossible: http://tankfront.ru/ussr/tbr/tbr148.html To clarify, you should go to the page of 2nd TC, and exactly in section III.Numerical and combat composition of corps: http://tankfront.ru/ussr/tk/tk02.html#3ref I will return to topic of heavy tank brigades KV, when I must to review the specifics of the organization of units of studied Shtat.
With the next, finally without fragments document, I conclude today's message and supplement the previously posted: download/file.php?id=446679&t=1
Order of NKO USSR No.00108 from June 1, 1942.jpg
Like the Order No.0295 from which everything began today, russian text is located on the same resource: http://tankfront.ru/ussr/doc/nko/pr42/00/00108.html
Since all the material is very voluminous, I decided to divide it into parts, as I still have not figured out the limitation of images in one post. This part was not quite ordinary in content - 'conceptual-terminological', the following materials must to be in a more familiar way.
I want to thank You first of all, Dear Gary, Thank you very much! You unintentionally initiated my research! Special thanks to the creators and the entire administration of the sites: pamyat-naroda.ru and tankfront.ru ! Many thanks to all those, who are involved in the existence of our forum! Thank you all for your attention!

Best regards

I connecting the last process with the following interesting moment - in spring of 1942 freedom of creativity in relation to shtats was available not only to the Main Directorate of Formations and Staffing of People's Commissariat of Defense USSR, but also to lower-level structures such as the command of the Fronts and Armies.
Where does this follow from?
I guess, "standard" means that it wasn't applied to various reduced-strength establishments (like SK, SP etc).

I greeting You, Art! Thanks for your attention and your question! My basis - the "standart shtat", this is shtat for which already will not assume the additions and changes on all other levels, except for additions and changes from most above level, i.e. from the initiator of creating(сomrade Stalin), direct developer(comrade Fedorenko) and direct publisher(comrade Shchadenko). Or it's not so? And this interpretation of mine is compatible with your interpretation, Dear Art! I apologize to You, Art and the whole community for that, I was not giving any links in that place to the facts of additions to shtat in the fields, both planned and implemented. The structure of the material has already been formed so - the links will definitely be further, but I have already regretted my decision to split the material into parts, so I will take into account and draw conclusions.

Best regards

Establishment 010/345 was issued in February 1942 in connection with plans to form 120 new tank brigades. It was essentially a streamlined and more economical version of the earlier establishment 010/303 from December 1941. At the same time several reduced-establishment tank brigades were formed in the first months of 1942, in particular as corps units for newly formed cavalry and rifle corps. They had only tanks without infantry and support elements. I believe, the word "typical" or "standard" means that it wasn't supposed to be applied to these ad-hoc establishments.
