Thank you, Max. I guess you are right...

Hello ilfil and uncle,

Thank you for the information and additional picture of the RSO prototype trailer. I'm still trying to wrap my poor brain around this concept and a few questions come to mind:

1. As seen in the scale model below the engine has a bit of height to it:
rso-pak-03.jpg
In the photo that uncle posted I don't any sign of an engine housing in the trailer. Maybe it is obscured by the tailgate?

2. How is the rear engine and drive wheels controlled so as to operate in coordination with those of the tractor? Or is power transferred from the tractor engine to the rear by a shaft(s) and several universal joints?

3. I also can imagine the difficulty of a load of troops in full battle dress embarking/disembarking and negotiating the slats, even with the tailgate lowered.

I would appreciate any of your thoughts on this, as you know there is limited information available.
Cheers,
Max

It was laugh. How this thing is supposed to turn in case there was a driving shaft?
Apparently the trailer driving part has its own engine with common command from the tractor. On the side picture it is well visible the body is high enough to allow engine fitting under it.

Hi uncle and ilfil,
Thanks, uncle for the 2 new pictures which provide much more clarity. Yes I agree that flexible shaft drive was a highly improbable afterthought on my part. My reasoning was that a system of shafts connected by U-joints or some exotic type of flexible coupling might have provided some limited articulation between tractor and trailer, although with much loss in efficiency. Knowing the complex and sometimes over-engineered vehicles that came out of the TR, I figured just about anything was possible, if highly improbable. Again this was just wild speculation based on the assumption there was only one engine.

Obviously the new pics show there was headroom for a second motor. I would still like to know exactly how this and it's drive train were controlled to coordinate the rear tracks in synch with the maneuvers of the tractor. Or perhaps I am overthinking this and their is a simple solution.

Anyway, I agree with you both, and thanks again for your valuable input.
Cheers,
Max

Hi Max,

sorry, I could not find more information, not even in the Waffen-Arsenal Special Band 27 "Raupenschlepper Ost - Entwicklung und Einsätze" by Wolfgang Fleischer, only another pic of this special vehicle (source of the pic: http://tsushima.su/forums/viewtopic.php?pid=714449).

Regards

Bert

Hi Bert,
Nothing to be sorry about. Every picture is valuable when there is so little info out there on this odd bird. (I say that because it reminds me of is a terrestrial version of the Me 323 Gigant. ) Thanks for your research and for posting the photo.
Cheers,
Max
