Hitler's term in office was just a few months longer than FDR's, 30 January 1933 to April 30, 1945. Roosevelt, March 4, 1933 – April 12, 1945. The 20th Amendment changed the presidential inaugural to January 20 in 1933. This made "lame duck" sessions less lame.

Talking about "shock and grief" over his death is a little overblown. FDR ran for re-election in November 1944, in the middle of America's great offensives in Europe and the Pacific, and 45% of the USA voted AGAINST Him. And one of FDR's flaws is that he never respected anyone who opposed him, and he shut almost all Republicans out of almost important Government posts. Go read "New Dealers War" by Thomas Fleming.

And FDR had been dying for over a year, and never should have run for re-election. Since April 1,1945 he'd been holed up in Warm springs, signing off documents, playing cards, and resting. He was working about 3-4 hours a day, which is all he was physically able to. As for Lucy Mercer, his own Daughter Anna, thought it was a good thing for FDR to see Lucy. I don't see why it shouldn't be mentioned. Its not like FDR was watching "shark week" with a porn star.

That's one view. "New Dealer's War" certainly gives the tone of the tome.

Do you remember why Stimson and Knox were read out of the Republican party?

As for the "45%", the remarkable thing isn't that so many voted against him, but that free elections were held during a war. A Republican president did that in 1864.

Good afternoon Rcocean,

Appreciate contribution to thread.

Politico's readership isn't really us at AHF.

"Should", "should not" and the variations don't count. Only $$$ counts. I vaguely recall NYC received 3 times more Fed $ than Philadelphia. Hyde Park knew the location of Wall Street.

Mercer had a counterpart. Eleanor had a national journalist companion. Again, Politico's focused readership isn't us.

Considering what Eleanor was like, I think I too would have an affair with Lucy Mercer; two cousins; and Elizabeth Shoumatoff, who was painting his portrait. His dog, Fala; No,nyet, nein, nein, nein!!!

Not close cousins, Eleanor was more closely related to Theodore.

I don't think either man was read out of the Republican party. After all, Wilkie, a war-hawk, was the titular head of the Republican party until he lost in Wisconsin Primary in April 1944. It needs to be remembered that both men were extremely old - for the time - during WW2 - and neither was much of a Republican. Stimson was 72 in 1940, and Knox was 66. Both men had served in France in 1918, and both men were "Bull Moose" Progressives who supported Teddy Roosevelt 3rd party in 1912. Knox was also a great friend of Harold Ickes, which tells you what kind of Republican he was.

But Knox was really a less important figure (FDR didn't even give him access to his Top-secret 'Map Room), so I'll write about Stimson. This guy was less a Republican, than a non-partisan member of the East Coast Establishment. He was Sec of State under Hoover, but refused to attack FDR in the 1932 campaign. He thought it was beneath his dignity. Then he retired from politics. In 1938, he was 100% in favor of FDR's foreign policy. In fact, he thought FDR was too cautious. Stimson wanted full aid to Britain after June 1940, and wanted FDR to ask for a declaration of war in May 1941. As a side note: Stimson's life-long friend and assistant during his Secretary of War days in the Taft Administration was Felix Frankfurter.

Whatever, but our grandparents, some parents and uncles, etc. were still part of the Greatest Generation. It was a great time in our history. I sorta wish I was born i the 1920s.
Best,
Bill
