Did The Nazis climb the Elbruz ?

Post by DavidFrankenberg » 24 May 2019, 18:15

Hi,

Goebbels claimed that the german troops had planted the nazi flag upont the Mount Elbruz, but his images are fake.

Do we have proofs of such climbing ?

I have read one time that they never did it and were never able to even try it.

From Völkischer Beobachter, Wiener Ausgabe, 26 Aug 1942

26 Aug 1942 VB WA.jpg

And OKW communique had 21 Aug 1942, 11am, as a date/time for this event.

Why do you think that? German troops captured a hotel/meteo station several km south of the summit in August 1942 and stayed there for several months. So they had enough opportunities.
According to a popular legend a Soviet alpinist party was sent in early 1943 specially to remove the flag, but I haven't check its credibility.

From daily reports of 4.Geb.Div. That's where most likely 11am came from...

Is that true Hitler got mad hearing about the climbing (because of its triviality in time of military crisis)?

The guy was Captain Alexander Gussev.

He published a book in russian in 1948 named Elbrous. He was very famous.

But no nazi flag was ever planted there. The images of such a flag are propaganda footage made by Goebbels.
Eugen Hof, the photograph of the expedition was not able to make any photos of it. The nazis are supposed to have been taken into a storm once they reached the summit, so indeed the flag was supposedly ripped by the wind... the alpinists didnt even know if they planted the flag at the right place...
That's a fishy story.

Which photos are you talking exactly about?
Those you can find all over the internet are quite recently photoshopped (a flag added) and have nothing to do with "footage made by Goebbels".

Nice photo from VB 3-Sep-42 showing Mt Elbrus from the moraine, several hundreds meters below the summits.

The entry from the divisional report, I attached earlier, mentioned they left divisional flags for both 1st and 4th Geb.Div on the summit.
Perhaps they just left pennants ?

The battle for the mountain involved neutralizing numerous soviet outposts. Hitler was not happy at the GJ taking this as a propaganda opportunity.

Look up some names like Hauptmann Heinz Groth and the east summit or Oberleutnant d.R. Herbert Leupold and the higher west summit some days later.
There are pictures of the group climbing the mountain and carrying at least 2 of the 3 flags but not known if they are those placed by Groth on the lower summit.

Is that true Hitler got mad hearing about the climbing (because of its triviality in time of military crisis)?
According to A.Speer:

Then the report arrived that a detachment of German mountain troops had taken Mount Elbrus, nearly nineteen thousand feet high, the highest mountain in the Caucasus and surrounded by broad fields of glaciers. They had planted the German war flag there. To be sure, this was a superfluous action, certainly on the smallest scale,* which could be understood only as an adventure by a group of enthusiastic mountain climbers. All of us could sympathize with the impulse behind this act, but otherwise it seemed to us completely unimportant. I often saw Hitler furious but seldom did his anger erupt from him as it did when this report came in. For hours he raged as if his entire plan of campaign had been ruined by this bit of sport. Days later he went on railing to all and sundry about "these crazy mountain climbers" who "belong before a court-martial." There they were pursuing their idiotic hobbies in the midst of a war, he exclaimed indignantly, occupying an idiotic peak even though he had commanded that all efforts must be concentrated upon Sukhumi. Here was a clear example of the way his orders were being obeyed.
