Vehicle identity requests
Re: Vehicle identity requests
Hi Sturm 78,
an interesting question about the Volkswagen.
Image 1: I think it is the type 92 SS, because this type was delivered to SS units. It could also be the type 82 E. The type 92 got the designation 82 E from April 1943.
Image 2: I think it is the type 51 produced after the end of the war for the British troops (former type 92/82 E). Here pic with Volkswagen type 51 (source of the pic and the information: "Volkswagen Militärfahrzeuge 1938 - 1948" by Hans-Georg Mayer-Stein.
Best regards
Bert

Ummhhh. I am not sure about the image 1. According to Wikipedia : Type 82/7: Three-seat 'Command car' made up of a Type 82 chassis, fitted with a Beetle body and roll-up canvas roof section. These three-seaters had a co-drivers seat with fully reclining backrest for the commander.
The vehicle of my image seems to have a canvas roof....
Any image of the VW Type 87 ??

Re: Vehicle identity requests
Hi Sturm 78,
thank You very much for Your critical reply.
There are other designations in the book "Volkswagen Militärfahrzeuge 1938 - 1948" by Hans-Georg Mayer-Stein:
type 82 - 7: three-seat command superstructure on the normal Kübelwagen type 82
type 82 - E: chassis of the normal Kübelwagen with the limousine superstructure, called "Geländekäfer"
Mayer-Stein: "It is possible there were built only three Allrad-Käfer (four-wheel-beetle): two vehicles in 1941 ..., and another vehicle in 1943 in Stuttgart."
Here three pics of this cabrio-limousine with four-wheel-drive, October 1943, with the designation type 98 out of the book "Volkswagen Militärfahrzeuge".
Best regards

Re: Vehicle identity requests
Hi guys,
In my archives I have the first pic Bert posts here labelled as Type 87, although I have no longer a source reference. AFIK the 87 also had the kübel/schwimmwagen chassis.
The pic below purportedly shows the Type 87 but I'll welcome any corrections.
Cheers,
Max

Re: Vehicle identity requests
Hi Sturm 78, hi Max,
in the book of Mayer-Stein there is the information, that newer investigations are leading to some doubts, that Volkswagen built 564 four-wheel drive beetles, because all chassis with four-wheel drive were completely recorded under the designation type 87, also these with a Kübelwagen superstructure.
The designation type 87 is a generic term, specified by additional designation with numbers:
type 87: chassis with four-wheel drive
type 87 - 0: Kübelwagen superstructure (four seats)
type 87 - 1: Kübelwagen superstructure (three seats)
type 87 - 7: closed superstructure limousine (command car)
Best regards
Bert
