Extra knowledge: Sinop is the home of Diogenes who said this famous quatation to Alexander. "Don't shade my sun"
On the other hand my motto is "I dont want to shade others sun. So that I stay by the fass/barrel."

Mate,

I found this but no mention of results?

"One of the greatest achievements of Turkish pilots in the Caucasian front came on February 13, 1917, when they bombed the Russian air base in Erzincan and the Russian headquarters in Yerhani. Russians were quick to retaliate, they bombed first Refahiye and then Giresun, destroying the aircraft hangar there. Russian aircraft were taking off from two air bases in Erzincan, one base in Haydarabad (Persia) and one base in Erzurum. At the same time the Russian fleet was shelling Turkish coastal towns of Giresun, Ordu, Samsun and Ünye."

Sorry does not mention Sinope but they were around there?

looks like about 75km east to the nearest from Sinope. That is 2 hrs hard steaming time.

Felix,

I also notice you wrote;

"On Jan 25 Russian ships sank a a Turkish vessel with the entire their entire aeroplane fleet onboard.-unconfirmed"

The Turks reports this;

Turkish military aviation had received a great blow right after the Empire entered the war. On November 6, 1914, the Russian fleet sunk three Turkish vessels off Zonguldak. Two Bleriot planes that were intended to be used at the Caucasus front went down with the ships. Their pilots Salim Bey and Fesa Bey were taken prisoner and spent the next five years in Siberia. Consequently, Turkish troops had to fight at Köprüköy and Sarıkamış without air support.

Thats the only mention of air craft being lost due to Naval action, I can find so far?

The 7th Tayyare Boluk (Aircraft Company) was operational along the coast and carried out sorties against the Russian Fleet (mostly recce) with little results.

Limited air strength and poor maintence, was the main cause for the lack of operations here?

Mate,

The source cames from the webb site called "Turkey in the First World War"

EMAIL: [email protected]

another part of the site gives us this;

"Turkish transports routes were indeed under threat. On December 6, three Turkish ships carrying supplies to the Caucasian front, Mithatpaşa, Bahr-i Ahmer and Bezm-i Alem, were sailing without escort when they encountered the Russian fleet that has bombed Zonguldak. All of them were sunk by the Russians, losing not only the valuable supplies including two aircrafts and an air battalion, but also 203 men, of whom 120 were taken prisoner by the Russians."

The aircraft were to form the 2nd Tayyare Boluk (Aircraft Company) for the Caucasian front.

Its lost meant that the Sqn was not formed on that front and reformed in Mesopotania.

2nd Sqn - formed (2x bleriot) 11-14 lost on way to 3rd Army reformed for Mesopotamia (18th Corps) (10x Aircraft (4x pfalz) 11x aircrew) 12-15 at Baghdad

The 7th Sqn was the first Sqn sent to the Caucasian Front almost two years later?

7th Sqn - formed 6x planes (2x Gotha's) for Caucasian front 2-16 to Erzincan 5-16 shown (2x Albatros C3 + captured Caudron G4) at Susehri 12-16 reported formed into one Sqn with 8th Sqn at Batum 3-18

Cheers

I found an article detailing the little sailing vessels sunk on one raid in 1915. They were under 100tons.
So there is a registry somewhere of the small tonnage losses.
