However, are you sure that it is a Russian SHKAS? What would a German unit be doing with this in 1940?

I think a Breda-SAFAT Italian machinegun but...7.7mm or 12.7mm caliber ?? :?
How is it possible differenciate between both calibers ??

Yes, of course, they are very similar. The difference in size, moreover, the proportions are observed very accurately.
For identification, you often have to pay attention to the sight, muzzle brake, tripod and other small elements.
