It is said that Beria was fan of football (soccer). As head of NKVD and very furious that his favorite team (Dynamo) lost to the opponent team of Spartak he decided to murder the head of the Spartak club : Alexander Kossarev.

In what extent is it true ?

Did Beria use his powers as head of the NKVD in order to take revenge at people like soccer player ?

Details of events leading to Kosarev's demise are described in Russian wiki:

Even if football played some role, it wasn't the largest one.

I don't know Russian, but I guess Ольга Петровна Мишакова (1906, Козельский уезд, Калужская губерния — 1980, Москва) means he died in 1980

Yes.
Indeed, apparatchiks brought him down at a November 1938 Komsomol plenum with accusations of favoritism and alcoholism,
he was trialed and spent almost one month in jail.
He lost his job in Komsomol and Spartak.
He was rehabilitated in 1953.
But what did he do between 1938 and 1953 ?

Eh, shot dead?

Long story short: a crazed woman attempted to purge alleged "hostile elements" including some Kosarev's proteges from a local Komsomol organization. Kosarev got angry and fired her. She didn't give up and addressed Stalin personally. The wheels started turning and Kosarev was fired himself for a lack of alertness, and soon thereafter arrested and executed.

Kosarev's wife remembered his relations with Beria were strained even before the latter became the chief of NKVD and alleged that this personal animosity was behind his case.

You are right. After one month in jail he was not freed but shot.

I was misled by mars' post.
