Oberstleutnant of Flak Unit in Normandy

#1

Post by patrick.fissot » 23 Dec 2010, 18:26

Hello,
I would like to have more information about an oberstleutnant, coming from a Flak Unit, who fought during Normandy battle, in the area of Argentan. Is it possible to know who he was, as he was wearing the golden cross on his jacket. Is it possible to find listings with Golden cross holders somewhere, to continue my search?
Sorry, Idon't have more details concerning that guy...
Many thanks in advance for your help,
Sincerely,
PATRICK

Yes, Patrick, I will be able to give you career details on the Obstlt. d.Flakartillerie, but not without his name or his unit. As an Oberstleutnant, he probably commanded a Flak-Regiment, but which one? What date around Argentan?

By "golden cross" I assume you mean the Deutsches Kreuz in Gold? Here is a web site that has all of the DKiG awardees:

http://www.ww2awards.com/

Maybe this site can help you identify him.

Hello Larry,
Firstly, many thanks for your help. It will be difficult, I agree, to find information concerning my subject but I'm quite sure it's still possible. This oberstleutnant was probably commanding a LW Flak unit, and he should have been captured in the "Falaise cauldron", during the middle of august, maybe in the area of Argentan. I'm sure this unit fought in Normandy, in August, 1944; There aren't so much LW Flak-units, at this period, in this area! As "my" officer was high ranking officer, wearing a "Deutsches Kreuz" in gold, I'll try to find him in listings, by following your link.
Many thanks and Merry Christmas!

Hi Patrick -

Normandy, July-August 1944, then it's probably one of these:

Oberst Werner von Kistowski, Flak-Sturm-Rgt. 1.
Obstlt. Walter Bayer, Flak-Sturm-Rgt. 1.
Obstlt. Georg Lyncker, Flak-Sturm-Rgt. 1.
Oberst Josef Moser, Flak-Sturm-Rgt. 2.
Oberst Oskar Schöttl, Flak-Sturm-Rgt. 3. DKiG awarded Dec 43.
Obstlt. Johann Büttner, Flak-Sturm-Rgt. 3. DkiG awarded Mar 44. No info after Aug 44.
Oberst Herbert Köhler, Flak-Sturm-Rgt. 4.

Only two of them had the DKiG. The most likely is Büttner because my notes on him end with August 1944, but I cannot say one way or the other whether he was captured on not.

Here he is:

BÜTTNER, Johann. (DKG). 03.41 Maj., appt Kdr. le.Res.Flak-Abt. 923. 01.03.44 promo to Obstlt. 20.03.44 awarded DKG, le.Flak-Abt. 81. 01.08.44 appt Kdr. Flak-Sturm-Rgt. 3 (a.k.a. Flak-Rgt. 37 (mot)) (to 08.44).

That's all I have on him.

Larry

Hello,

My great-grandfather was called Walter Bayer and he was Oberstleutnant of an Flak Unit. But i don’t know much about him, because he died early in the seventys. My mother told me, that he was also Oberstleutnant of Flak Unit in Hamburg. But I’m not sure. He was born in Selisia and died in Hamburg.

I‘m not sure, if he was wearing a German cross.

Best regards

Alex

Hello Alex,

BAYER, Walter. (DOB: 23.06.95). 04.04.42 Maj.(Erg.O.), in Flak-Abt. 267, appt Kdr. le.Flak-Abt. 877
(still 05.44). 01.08.42 promo to Obstlt. 01.07.44 Obstlt., Kdr. le.Flak-Abt. z.b.V. 11100 (b.mot.).
20.07.44 appt acting Kdr. Flak-Sturm-Rgt. 1 (to 01.08.44).

schwere Flak-Abt. 267 (o) was based at Hamburg from summer 1941. On 1 November 1943 it was operating as Flakgruppe Hamburg-Nord with Stab in Langenhorn/11 km N of Hamburg city center.

leichte Flak-Abt. 877 (v) was stationed in the Danzig (Gdansk) area under Flak-Rgt. 62 (a.k.a. Flakgruppe Westpreußen) during 1943 and early 1944.

On 11 Jul 44, le.Flak-Abt. 11100 (mot.), which had just been formed, was to be subordinated to III. Flakkorps in Normandy to unify and expand road patrols to counter Allied fighter-bomber attacks on German lines of supply.

Larry, do you happen to have the names of the commanders of some of the battalions in Flak-Sturm-Rgt.4?
(This is related to the search of tmac1397 for his missing uncle)

I did find names for I./35, I./53, I./141 and le.Flak-Abt.98, but I don't fully trust the source nor spelling.

Thank you very much Larry,

It’s my Great Grandfather. I was talking to my grandmother today. She told me, that her father was in Hamburg and Danzig too. After Normandie he was in an other Division. Wachbatallion of something in Germany. He was arrested in Großenbrode and came back to Hamburg early 1946.

In WW I he was Leutnant of Cavallary. He got the Iron Cross in WW I
Best regards

Hi Niels,

I have many or most of them but, as you know, the composition of the regiments was constantly changing. So, if "tmac1397" will give me a specific date and the names of the Abteilung-Kdre. that he already has, I will try and fill in the gaps and make corrections if and where needed.

Flak-Sturm-Rgt. 4
15 Jul 44: Normandy under III. Flakkorps with I./35, I./53, I./141 and le.96. (NARA T-971 roll 18/frame 054)
21 Aug 44: Flak-Sturm-Rgt. 1 and Flak-Sturm-Rgt. 4 reported the loss of nearly all of their weapons and equipment in the heavy fighting in the Falais – Argentan area and need a near-complete replacement of both in order to rebuild. (BNA HW 5/569)
21 Aug 44: Rgt. Gef.St./Flak-Sturm-Rgt. 4 and the remnants of the six (6) Abt. assigned to it (1./35, 1./53, 1./141, le.80, le.90 and le.98) assembled in and around Sacqueville/8 km N of Evreux and employed to protect the town and Evreux airfield. (BNA HW 5/570/0298)

For example, for I./Flak-Rgt. 35 check our Lw.OCS on ww2.dk for Maj. Martin Wittkowsky and for Maj. Wilhelm Mätje.

Thanks Larry, the references to the sources is also very useful.
The period we are looking at is around 22 June, which is when his uncle's plane was shot down and Flak-Sturm-Rgt.4 seems to be the most likely to be responsible.

This is what I've found so far:
- I./141: Hptm. Rückwaft
- I./53: Hptm. Schütte-Felsche)
- I./35: Maj. Mätie
- le.98: Hptm. Schieler

Back to you, Niels - heavy thunderstorms with lots of lightning here for the past two days so I thought it best to get off my computer.

Here is what I have for 22 June 1944:

I./Flak-Rgt. 35
Maj. Wilhelm Mätje

I./Flak-Rgt. 53
Hptm. Joachim Schütte-Felsche

I./Flak-Rgt. 141
Hptm. Georg Rückwardt

le.Flak-Abt. 98
Hptm. Helmut Schüler

The spelling is correct for all of these as well as the date. You can check them out on our (deZeng and Stankey) Luftwaffe Officer Career Summaries (Lw.OCS) on the Michael Holm website, www.ww2.dk. The source for all of them is original wartime German documents.

Thanks Larry! That makes a lot more sense.

Never realized that kind of information was available on that website. Very, very useful!

For Johann Büttner, see here.
There are times in history when staying neutral means taking sides.
