Ivan, what is your source for Wagner ordering the destruction of the Petrovgrad synagogue? I have yet to find any reputable source mentioning this.Ivan Ž. wrote: ↑17 Nov 2017, 06:07I've noticed that Jürgen Wagner's indictment and reasons for his execution aren't really known today, at least not online. First of all, he was not charged (at least not primarily) for his actions while he commanded the "Nederland" Brigade during its formation in Croatia in 1943. He was charged for his (today forgotten) involvement in war crimes committed right after the very invasion of Yugoslavia, in April 1941, while he was a short-term city commander in the Banat capital, Petrovgrad (Zrenjanin) - which is also why he was tried and executed (by firing squad) in that city. At the time, Wagner was an SS-Ostubaf. and commander of the II Batl./ SS-Regt. "Deutschland"/ SS-Div. "Reich".
These were the main reasons Wagner was tried and executed (a quote from the 1987 book "Zrenjaninske vatre" by Đ. Momčilović; the text was originally published in the "Slobodna Vojvodina" newspapers in 1947):Wagner was also heavily involved in the persecution of the local Jews (who were all soon exterminated - not by him though - he "only" rounded them up and placed in a camp until their extermination), from day one, and he actually ordered the destruction of the huge city synagogue from 1896 (the building was completely disassembled, brick by brick, and the building material, the same as everything valuable inside the temple, was then "confiscated" by the Germans). Note: Jürgen Wagner was the Petrovgrad commander for only two weeks! ...but two really "busy weeks".The accused SS Major General of the German Army Jürgen Wagner, a hardcore Nazi and a former SS-Brigadeführer, entered the Banat with his troops on the first day after the Yugoslav collapse in 1941. He immediately gave orders for the execution of the population, without thinking for one moment that he would ever be held responsible for his criminal actions. The mass graves in Alibunar and Petrovgrad confirm his involvement in these, up until then unheard of, crimes in the Banat.

Re: Jürgen Wagner
Hello, RichD-M
If you're interested in Jürgen Wagner and the extermination of the Banat Jews, do check the listed sources (which are reputable).
"Zločini okupatora i njihovih pomagača u Vojvodini", (newly-)edited by Dr Drago Njegovan and published by Prometej (Novi Sad), is a series of books (reports) by the Provincial (Vojvodina) War Crimes Commission, originally written in the 1940s (the commission started working already during the war; it is all neatly explained in the books). You may check the volumes dealing with crimes against the Jews and with ethnic Germans. If you check the volume dealing with crimes against the Jews (Zločini okupatora i njihovih pomagača u Vojvodini protiv Jevreja), you'll see there's a chapter called "Sinagoge" (Synagogues - page 229). You'll find Wagner's name and role mentioned there.
I believe you'll find "Zrenjaninske vatre" by Đorđe Momčilović (SUBNOR, Zrenjanin, 1987) also useful (the author specialised in the Banat region). Again, it's easy for browsing. Search for the chapter called "Istrebljenje Jevreja" (Extermination of the Jews - pages 166-172). There you'll find the info on the Petrovgrad (Zrenjanin) synagogue and Wagner. But check other chapters dealing with the early days of the German occupation too. I'm sure you'll find Momčilović's sources useful as well, which will suggest you where to search for more info if you're interested in the subject.
Of course and most importantly, don't forget to search in the Archives of Yugoslavia (Arhiv Jugoslavije) for reports on Wagner, and you may also check what they have on Bittrich (regimental commander, also declared a war criminal). They also have reports on some other "Reich" Division officers (involved in the Alibunar crime, for example), maybe you'll find useful info there too.
Hope this helps.
Cheers,
Ivan

Re: Jürgen Wagner
Float up this post as I've read from some social media post illustrating that Jürgen Wagner's father was "General Ernst August Johann Wagner".
But I cannot find such a general in the info about Prusia or Weimar Republik.
Can anyone advise if J. Wagner was from a military background family pls?
Thanks & Regards

Re: SS-Brigadeführer Jürgen Wagner
The photo you have posted was made by myself, which I posted in my FB W-SS research group "Black Guard Research". They are indeed brothers. My biography of Jürgen Wagner (which has consumed my past 5+ years) will hopefully be published by Pen and Sword next year.AshenSocks wrote: ↑12 Nov 2023, 16:20Photo Source Forgotten.
