The hospital stay details were entered in the G-Buch back at his depot and from his discharge from the Lazarett in July 1942 he underwent regular medicals to judge how his condition affected his potential for further service.

The injury was severe enough that the soldier never served in the front line again. Instead he served from 1942 to 1945 with his parent unit's training depot back in Germany, in the convalescent company. In fact, in December 1944 (3 years after the wounding) the injury proved enough for the initial award of the Wound Badge in Black to be upgraded to the Silver class.

Re: Wehrmacht Medical Care in Photos and Documents
Thanks, hucks, for the share! Allways an interested read for a RN like myself. No wonder that he did stay a half year in the military hospital, while the entry reads "jawbone fracture left side due to bomb shrapnel" the more specific findings tells us about a jawbone fragmentation and injury of the soft tissue of the chin.
Did the really stick a miniature photo of the CR (cor/pulmo) x-ray in the booklet? I can´t see an entry for your result "In this case the soldier's chest & heart were reported as being OK."? Is it on a another side?

They did indeed stick the x-ray photo to the card and insert it into the G-Buch although the scan doesn't do it justice as it is a bit clearer when held up to the light. The entry for the result of the X-Ray is on the other side and takes the form of an official stamp but as it was the only thing on that side I didn't bother scanning that side in.

What is also shown in the Soldbuch and the G-Buch are the results of dental checks illustrating what the damage to his teeth was.

Re: Wehrmacht Medical Care in Photos and Documents
I´ve never seen so detailed documents about a soldiers health.
But note, while the 1st file shows exactly where he got a dental crown as fixation foor the dental bridge:
Kr = Krone = dental crown
Br = Brücke = dental bridge
the 2nd file states that he´s missing #4 ( = #34) too (f = fehlt = missing).
Even while he got almost 5 month earlier the tooth replacement!
And this is how it looked like
Hope you don´t mind the little illustration?

Thanks to all of you for sharing these pictures.
One question (stupid) from me: Where Wehrmacht medics on the frontlines compareable to modern paramedics or did they just perform very rudementary first aid and leave more advanced life saving to doctors?

To answer that question one would need to be familiar with the training of both.

Re: Wehrmacht Medical Care in Photos and Documents
The British (and Americans) were very interested in how the German medical service was able to cope with wounded soldiers on the eastern front. The very nice clean medical photos above and the the few posts do not show the reality in this document:
The reports goes on 14 pages; another report with information from a Luftwaffe Stabsarzt discusses over a page and half with British and American medical officers how his unit treated venereal disease cases - he had heard of penicillin but the Germans did not have this in 1945.You do not have the required permissions to view the files attached to this post.
