Where is Kahang Airfield, Johor, Malaysia

Hi all

As part of the RAF airfield building expansion programme, an airfield was built in the Kahang area. I’m trying to identify where it was on google maps, can anyone help.

Taken from

APPENDIX A
To Report on RAF Operations in Malaya and N E.I, 1941-2.
Situation at RAF. Stations in Malaya - 8th December, 1941.

I know

Location given as Kahang
1 GR Squadron was planned, probably an Australian Hudson Sqn.
The runway was grass
1-1,400 yds and 1-1,300 yds suggests 1 built and a second planned
Buildings to accommodate 2 Squadrons was in hand, suggesting these had been authorised, maybe being built.
Building of aircraft revetments was authorised, maybe being built.
There was no AA defence provided
Airfield security was provided by 1 Coy A.I.F. and Johore Military Forces details
And that 50 tons of munitions were stored or planned to be.

I also know later, as the Japanese moved south, a concern was a line of advance could be from the Endau area, down the Sungai Sembrong and Sungai Kahang to the Mersing Road and Kahang aerodrome, which might suggest the airfield lay between Kahang and the Kahang river, close by the Mersing road

Hi,

This really does not answer your question, only shows your assumptions are correct.
It was just north of Mersing road, NE of Kahang. Unfortunately river is not marked, so we can't tell if it was E or W of the river...

These maps are even worse, but perhaps mentioned books can help...

Hi Greg

Thanks for the reply

The Japanese used the airfield after its capture.

The Palembang operation consisted of the 2nd Paratroop Regiment, other sources call it the 2nd Raiding Regiment, either way, this was the second outfit ready for the parachute operations. The 1st Raiding Regiment remained at Haikow Field on Hainan Island. The first wave consisted of about 270 paratroopers under command of Major Niihara, originating from the captured airfield at Kahang in occupied Malaya, dropped above Palembang, and P1 the airfield, an hour and a half after dawn on 14 February 1942. Airlifted in 34 Ki 57's from the 1st, 2nd and 3rd Chutai's, under the overall air command of Major H. Shinbara, plus seven more Ki 56 carrying supplies to be dropped. This airborne force was protected by elements of the heavy bomber 98th Sentai, with escorts from the 59th and 64th Sentai's.

34 Ki 57's is quite a number for one airfield, so this must have been fairly substantial. I'd guess the escorts came from other airfields.

Hi.

I have just come across this post and wondered if you had managed to pinpoint the location of Kahang Airfield?

If not, I might be able to help.

Fatboy Coxy,

Still not sure if you managed to discover the location of Kahang Airfield.

In case you did not, the image below shows the airfield on Google Earth circa 2009. The lat/long position given in the bottom right corner of the image puts my cursor in the centre of the airfield.

The airfield is just to the west of the Sg Kahang and to the north of the Kluang - Jemaluang Road which is seen running diagonally through the image.

Kahang was used by British forces for various exercises right up to their withdrawal in the early-70s. The last time that I drove past, some 10 years ago, it was still surrounded by fencing with signs indicating that it was a restricted area still in evidence. I believe that it is still in use by Malaysian forces.

Hope that helps.

Edit:

I also have the location of Kuala Ketil Airfield if you are still looking for that.

The only indication regarding the location of Kuala Ketil airfield that I have found is on an old 1953 issue 1:1,000,000 aeronautical chart.

That chart shows Kuala Ketil and Lubok Kiap airfields, both close together, southeast of Sungai Patani. For some strange reason, the airfield at Sg Patani is not shown. It certainly should have been as it was very much still operational at that time.

This is a section of that chart:
1953Chart2.jpg

Reading through the 62 Sqn ORB, it seems that, in the months leading up to the outbreak of hostilities, the squadron had a monthly tasking to photograph progress on the airfields in the northwest of the penisular. The airfields mentioned include Alor Star, Sungai Patani, Lubok Kiap, Butterworth and Ipoh. There is no mention of Kuala Ketil at all.

I have looked closely at the current and historical images on Google Earth and can find nothing in those areas that might indicate exactly where the airfields might have been.

Do you have anything else?

Challenge accepted.

In fact, I researched the location of these two AMES units some two years ago and managed to pin them down pretty accurately.

The first, 511 AMES, was setup at Bukit Chunang, a 150ft hill on a point known as Tanjong Kilok, in the extreme southeast of Johor. These feature names do not seem to appear on any modern maps of the area.

Below is a screenshot from the current GE image with the location marked.

Bkt Chunang002A.jpg

The second unit, 512 AMES, was a little more difficult to pinpoint. However, having had sight of some old maps of the area, I believe it was located on Bukit Tanjong Kupang, a 250ft hill in the southwest corner of Johor. This belief was based on reading through the 512 AMES ORB and descriptions of the location given in it. Again, I attach a screenshot from the current GE image with the location marked.

Hope that helps.

Were the locations given in my previous two posts of any use to you?

Well that's one way of resurrecting a thread I suppose.

Apologies LaurieB, I didn't answer your post. Yes those locations were of great help to me. I'm trying to write an alternative timeline on the Malayan Campaign of 1941-42, exploring the possibilities of Britain being able to hold off the Japanese invasion. With regard to Radar, I've been working hard at establishing exactly what they had, where was it, and how well it worked.

Kind Regards

Glad that helped.

Always good to get feedback.

I have no idea what the previous post was all about.
