Sorties for obscure Ar 234 squadrons

#1

Post by Spikes » 24 Oct 2019, 18:19

Hi all,

I am curious if anyone has information on the various obscure Ar 234 squadrons that operated toward the end of the war. In particular, I am looking for III./Ergänzungskampfgeschwader 1 which was redesignated from IV./KG 76. I am curious what these units would have been doing late in the war, presumably bombing bridges and things of that nature?
Additionally it would be interesting to see what the Sonderkommando units would have been doing (that were located further south in Italy and Austria.
I hope there is some sort of resource on this, but I understand it is a lesser known part of the Luftwaffe.

One problem with finding such information is that it is scattered. The operations in the Bohemia-Moravia Protectorate and over Czech territory are little known and clues have been partly uncovered from photos of abandoned or partly wrecked examples. See the book: Luftwaffe Over Czech Territory - 1945, IV. Messerschmitt Me 262 Production & Arado Ar 234 Final Operations by JaPo Publishing.

I will have to look into that book, it looks like a pretty obscure one so hopefully I can obtain it.

Do you have it? If so, does it cover only operations specifically in the Czech areas, or 262 & 234 information as a whole?

Thanks again for the quick reply!

I have the book that was published before it. And yes, these books sell out quickly. I wish I could help further.

A new book is coming that covers KG 76. Expected in early 2020.

Yes I too wonder if there were more obscure Arado Ar 234 and Me 262 squadrons that were in action on the Eastern Front that were not covered in Luftwaffe books and papers. Sonderkommandos? By the way did the Ar 234s ever launched radio-controlled rocket bombs against the Soviets? I don't know if there were air to air victories over Allied and Soviet aircraft at all by Ar 234 jet bombers.

You should read the Eastern Front air war books being published by Christer Bergstrom https://vaktelforlag.se/produkt/black-c ... july-1943/

He will eventually reach 1944 and 1945.

Most or many of your questions about obscure jet units in action and under development at the end of the war can be found in this book:

Griehl, Manfred. Last Days of the Luftwaffe: German Luftwaffe Combat Units 1944-1945. Barnsley (Yorkshire): Frontline Books, 2009. ISBN: 978-1-84832-511-1. Hb. Dj. 262p. Heavily illus. Dwgs. Index.

Can anyone just named two obscure Luftwaffe fighter-bomber units in 1945 please for example?

From the book "Last Days of the Luftwaffe" there was a JG 80 unit which was under development. It was not completely formed.

Just saw these posts, apologies. I believe the Sonderkommando units were more or less recon only. A few of them operated in the Northern Italy area and some were doing operations over England.
